A question naturally arises, whether the pattern exhibited to the eyes of Moses in the mount was a heavenly original, or merely an external, perhaps miniature, form or likeness (Acts 7:44) - or whither, from the use of the present participle here, "I show thee," it is not to be considered strong mental perception or vision of the structure to be reared, as the representation of the temple was made to Ezekiel. He ordered a royal palace to be set up among them for himself, called a sanctuary, or holy place, or habitation. There he showed his presence among them. And because in the wilderness they dwelt in tents, this royal palace was ordered to be a tabernacle, that it might move with them. Verse Exodus 25:9. _AFTER THE PATTERN OF THE TABERNACLE_] It has been supposed that there had been a tabernacle before that erected by Moses, though it probably did not now exist; but the tabernacle which Moses is ordered to make was to be formed exactly on the model of this ancient one, the pattern of which God showed him in the mount, Exodus 25:40. The word משכן _mishcan_ signifies literally the _dwelling_ or _habitation_; and this was so called because it was the dwelling place of God; and the _only_ place on the earth in which he made himself manifest. Yahweh had redeemed the Israelites from bondage. He had made a covenant with them and had given them laws. He had promised, on condition of their obedience, to accept them as His own “peculiar treasure,” as “a kingdom of priests and an holy nation” Exodus 19:5. And now He was ready visibly to testify that He made his abode with them. After the gifts which God will accept have been specified, and the spirit in which they are to be offered noted (Exodus 25:2), God proceeds to unfold his purpose, and declare the object for which the gifts are needed. TABERNACLE PATTERN The tabernacle, speaking comprehensively, is explained in the New Testament As typical in three ways: (1) of the Church as a habitation of God through the Spirit (Exodus 25:8); (Ephesians 2:19). EXODUS 25-31. P THE TENT OF MEETING OR DWELLING OF YAHWEH. To pass from the action and movement, and the jostling of old and new, in Exodus 25:19 into the group of Chapter s 25- 31 is like passing from the crosscurrents and broken waters of an open, storm-tossed bay into the calm and order of an enclosed harbour. It is explained by the theory, now generally accepted, that strange as it seems to our ideas we have here no ancient, much less contemporary, account of the planning of the Tabernacle in minutest detail, but the leisurely elaboration, by that school of scribes of which Ezra was the type and leader, of their view of what must have been in the mind of Moses, on the general assumption that the Temple at Jerusalem before its destruction, Ezekiel's sketch (Ezekiel 40-48), and Zerubbabel's reconstructed building could be taken as imperfect copies of the ideal once realised in the gold...
