Orders to some proper person or persons about him; AND THEY CAUSED IT TO BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE CAMP, or "caused a voice to pass"; a crier or herald, as the Targums, who went through the camp and published in every quarter: SAYING, LET NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN MAKE ANY MORE WORK FOR THE OFFERING OF THE SANCTUARY; as the men in cutting shittim wood, and planing it, and the women in spinning blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and goats' hair: SO THE PEOPLE WERE RESTRAINED FROM BRINGING; that is, any more: instead of a spur to liberality, which most want, a restraint was laid upon these to check it, and prevent an excess in it, of which there is rarely any danger; so eager, forward, and zealous were they in this good work....

Delivery of the offerings to Bě ẓal"çl and Oholiab, and their assistants. The people continuing to bring offerings, in excess of what was required, are restrained by Moses. Another ideal picture: the people not only offer liberally, but offer more than is required; and their liberality has to be checked....

THE TEXT OF EXODUS TRANSLATION 36 And Be-zal-el and O-ho-li-ab shall work, and every wise-hearted man, in whom Je-ho-vah hath put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Je-ho-vah hath commanded. And every worker to whom the *LORD has given skill, should help them. They will know how to carry out all this special work. They will construct the special place where we will *worship the *LORD.’ V2 Then Moses asked Bezalel and Oholiab to come to him. He asked every person with skill to come with them. The *LORD had given skill to many workers and they all wanted to do this work for God.

SO THE PEOPLE WERE RESTRAINED FROM GIVING. — Moses felt it necessary to interfere, and forbid further offerings. By the expression, “Let neither man nor woman _make any more work,_ it would seem that the superfluous offerings were chiefly such things as were produced by labour — thread, goats’ hair yarn, and the like. (See Exodus 35:25.) The humblest class of contributors would thus appear to have shown itself the most zealous. When will Christian liberality be so excessive as to require to be “restrained”?...
