Probably the word means no more than _figures_ of any kind wrought in the _diaper_ fashion in the _loom_, or by the _needle_ in _embroidery_, or by the _chisel_ or _graving tool_ in _wood, stone_, or _metal_; Exodus 25:18, Exodus 25:18. This meaning Houbigant and other excellent critics contend for. _every wise hearted man_, &c. cf. _vv._1, 2, 4. In the account of the construction of the sanctuary these are mentioned only here; in the sequel (even in _v._8b) the sing. (referring to Bě ẓal"çl) is used regularly (as in Exodus 26:1; Exodus 26:4 &c.) till ch. 39, where the plur. reappears (though not uniformly). _the tabernacle the_ DWELLING. _EXODUS 36:8_.— It may be proper to observe here, for the sake of the learned reader, that the Vatican edition of the LXX varies much from all other copies of the Bible; giving us here that description of the priests' vestments, which we have in the 39th chapter, instead of the description of the tabernacle. There are also many other variations and transpositions throughout these five last Chapter s in that version, but none of them of any considerable importance. _WITH CHERUBIMS OF CUNNING WORK_— Houbigant renders this, _figuris opere textile intertextis:_ for כרוב _kerub,_ says he, in the Hebrew, is a genus, as _Castel,_ after _Aben-Ezra,_ shews us; and, before them, St. Jerome: and here it means _figure_ in general....
