_AND ABRAM AND NAHOR TOOK THEM WIVES: THE NAME OF ABRAM'S WIFE WAS SARAI; AND THE NAME OF NAHOR'S WIFE, MILCAH, THE DAUGHTER OF HARAN, THE FATHER OF MILCAH, AND THE FATHER OF ISCAH._ Abram and Nahor took them wives. The consuetudinary law of marriage in nomadic tribes obliges a young man to choose his wife from among those who are connected by ties of blood with his own clan. But in Terah's family matrimonial alliances, sanctioned, doubtless, by the customs of a pagan land, were allowed within degrees of consanguinity nearer than are permitted by the code of a more advanced and Christian society (cf. Genesis 20:12). The same practice obtained among the Hebrews in the pre-Mosaic age (cf. Exodus 2:1 with Numbers 26

27-32 Here begins the story of Abram, whose name is famous in both Testaments. Even the children of Eber had become worshippers of false gods. Those who are through grace, heirs of the land of promise, ought to remember what was the land of their birth; what was their corrupt and sinful state by nature. Abram's brethren were, Nahor, out of whose family both Isaac and Jacob had their wives; and Haran, the father of Lot, who died before his father. Children cannot be sure that they shall outlive their parents. Haran died in Ur, before the happy removal of the family out of that idolatrous country. It concerns us to hasten out of our natural state, lest death surprise us in it. We here read of Abram's departure out of Ur of the Chaldees, with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and the rest of his family, in obedience to the call of God. Verse Genesis 11:29. _MILCAH, THE DAUGHTER OF HARAN_] Many suppose _Sarai_ and _Iscah_ are the same person under two different names; but this is improbable, as _Iscah_ is expressly said to be the daughter of Haran, and _Sarai_ was the daughter of Terah, and half sister of Abram....

Genesis 11:27 and Genesis 11:31 f. are clearly from P, Genesis 11:28 probably from J (there are phraseological grounds), and Genesis 22:20 (J) refers to Genesis 11:29. GENESIS 11:28. UR OF THE CHALDEES: Heb. _ UR_ Kasdim, is generally identified with Uru, one of the most ancient cities of Babylonia, where the moon-god was worshipped, now Mugheir. The Chaldees (Ass. _Kaldu)_ lived on the SE.

Genesis 25:19, "And these are the generations of Isaac." _Haran begat Lot_ Lot the nephew of Abram, and the traditional ancestor of the peoples east of the Dead Sea. It is natural to suppose that the name has some affinity with that of "Lotan," a Horite family or tribe (Genesis 36:20; Genesis 36:29)....
