_AND THE DAYS OF TERAH WERE TWO HUNDRED AND FIVE YEARS: AND TERAH DIED IN HARAN._ And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years. This has long been regarded as a difficulty, for the solution of which various explanations have been offered; but all of them are unsatisfactory; and certainly it would be an insuperable difficulty if Abram were the oldest son, born in his father's 70th year; because adding 70 + 75, Abram's age on his departure "out of Haran," would make Terah's age only 145 years, the number assigned for it in the Samaritan Pentateuch. But according to the exposition given above of Genesis 11:26, together with the asserted brevity of the sojourn at Haran, which, though an hypothesis, meets all the conditions of the narrative, all difficulties are removed: for 130 + 75 = 205 years, Terah's age when he died....

27-32 Here begins the story of Abram, whose name is famous in both Testaments. Even the children of Eber had become worshippers of false gods. Those who are through grace, heirs of the land of promise, ought to remember what was the land of their birth; what was their corrupt and sinful state by nature. Abram's brethren were, Nahor, out of whose family both Isaac and Jacob had their wives; and Haran, the father of Lot, who died before his father. Children cannot be sure that they shall outlive their parents. Haran died in Ur, before the happy removal of the family out of that idolatrous country. It concerns us to hasten out of our natural state, lest death surprise us in it. We here read of Abram's departure out of Ur of the Chaldees, with his father Terah, his nephew Lot, and the rest of his family, in obedience to the call of God. His days are summed up as none of the rest are in this genealogy, that it might be observed; his death being the time of Abram's leaving Chaldea and coming into the land of Canaan, given to him and his seed for an inheritance; see Acts 7:4 AND TERAH DIED IN HARAN: the Arabic historian s says, he died in Haran in the month Elul, in the year of his age two hundred and sixty five; but he gives him sixty years too many: a Jewish chronologer t says he died in the thirty fifth year of Isaac. Genesis 11:27 and Genesis 11:31 f. are clearly from P, Genesis 11:28 probably from J (there are phraseological grounds), and Genesis 22:20 (J) refers to Genesis 11:29. GENESIS 11:28. UR OF THE CHALDEES: Heb. _ UR_ Kasdim, is generally identified with Uru, one of the most ancient cities of Babylonia, where the moon-god was worshipped, now Mugheir. The Chaldees (Ass. _Kaldu)_ lived on the SE.

DIED IN HARAN (Charran). With this Acts 7:4 agrees. Not seeing this, the Massorites wrongly marked Genesis 11:32 with an inverted _Nun_ () as being. dislocation of the Text....
