Genesis 17:21

_AND GOD SAID, SARAH THY WIFE SHALL BEAR THEE A SON INDEED; AND THOU SHALT CALL HIS NAME ISAAC: AND I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT WITH HIM FOR AN EVERLASTING COVENANT, AND WITH HIS SEED AFTER HIM._ The blessings of the covenant are reserved for Isaac, but common blessings were abundantly promised to Ishmael; and though the visible Church did not descend from his family, yet personally he might, and it is to be hoped did, enjoy its benefits....

15-22 Here is the promise made to Abraham of a son by Sarai, in whom the promise made to him should be fulfilled. The assurance of this promise was the change of Sarai's name into Sarah. Sarai signifies my princess, as if her honour were confined to one family only; Sarah signifies a princess. The more favours God confers upon us, the more low we should be in our own eyes. Abraham showed great joy; he laughed, it was a laughter of delight, not of distrust. Now it was that Abraham rejoiced to see Christ's day; now he saw it and was glad, John 8:56. Abraham, dreading lest Ishmael should be abandoned and forsaken of God, put up a petition on his behalf. God gives us leave in prayer to be particular in making known our requests. Verse Genesis 17:21. _MY COVENANT WILL I ESTABLISH WITH ISAAC_] All _temporal_ good things are promised to Ishmael and his posterity, but the establishment of the Lord's covenant is to be with Isaac. Hence it is fully evident that this covenant referred chiefly to _spiritual_ _things_-to the Messiah, and the salvation which should be brought to both Jews and Gentiles by his incarnation, death, and glorification....

Gunkel has given strong reasons for holding that J is here made up of two main sources, one connecting Abraham with Hebron, the other with Beersheba and the Negeb. The interest, which has hitherto been diffused over the fortunes of mankind in general, is now concentrated on Abraham and his posterity, the principle of election narrowing it down to Isaac, Ishmael being left aside, and then to Jacob, Esau being excluded....

The Promise to Sarai 15. _Sarah shall her name be_ That is, _Princess_. The name "Sarai" (LXX Σάρα) is altered to "Sarah" (LXX Σάῤῥα). The name "Sarah" is the feminine form of the Heb. _Sar_, "a prince." Other explanations which give the meaning "the contentious one," or "the merry one," are improbable. "Sarai" may possibly have been an older form of "Sarah." It cannot mean, as used to be asserted, "_my_princess....

MY COVENANT WILL I ESTABLISH, &C.— This is an abundant proof, that the _covenant_ which God entered into with Abraham, was of a _spiritual_ as well as a temporal nature, by being thus limited to his descendants by _Isaac_ only; _whom_ he condescends to promise him at a short and fixed period approaching, _this set time in the next year._ Michaelis has it, "my spiritual covenant with Christ." After this information, the Lord _left off talking with him, and went up from Abraham,_ most probably in some resplendent cloud, the symbol of the Divine appearance, Judges 13:20. REFLECTIONS.—God now more explicitly reveals his designs to Abraham. 1. A son is promised, not of the bond-woman, but of the free.
