_NEITHER SHALL THY NAME ANY MORE BE CALLED ABRAM, BUT THY NAME SHALL BE ABRAHAM; FOR A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE THEE._ Name shall be Abraham. In eastern countries the name given in infancy is sometimes in the course of life altered: a change of name is an advertisement of some new circumstance in the history, rank, or religion of the individual who bears it. And all who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abram, being partakers of the same covenant blessings. In token of this covenant his name was changed from Abram, "a high father," to Abraham, "the father of a multitude." Verse Genesis 17:5. _THY NAME SHALL BE ABRAHAM_] Abram אברם literally signifies a _high_ or _exalted father_. Ab-ra-ham אברהם differs from the preceding only in one letter; it has ה _he_ before the last radical. Though this may appear very simple and easy, yet the true etymology and meaning of the word are very difficult to be assigned. The reason given for the change made in the patriarch's name is this: _For a father of many nations have I made thee_, אב המון גוים ab-hamon goyim, "a father of a multitude of nations."
