The Sepuagint renders it here and Numbers 11:7 by _ ANTHRAX_ (G440) the ruby or the topaz. Bochart, after the Jewish commentators, takes it as signifying pearls; while others maintain that it is the whitish gum or resin distilled from a fragrant tree which grows in Arabia and Babylonia. But such a product would scarcely be of sufficient importance to entitle it to particular notice, and therefore there is greater probability that bdellium means a precious stone, the more especially as it is associated in this enumeration with gold and the onyx stone х_ HASHOHAM_ ...

Verse Genesis 2:12. _THERE IS BDELLIUM_ (בדלח bedolach) AND _THE ONYX_ _STONE_, אבן השהם eben hashshoham.] Bochart thinks that the bedolach or bdellium means the _pearl-oyster_; and _shoham_ is generally understood to mean the _onyx_, or species of _agate_, a precious stone which has its name from ονυξ a _man's nail_, to the colour of which it nearly approaches. It is impossible to say what is the precise meaning of the original words; and at this distance of time and place it is of little consequence....
