_AND ABRAHAM JOURNEYED FROM THENCE TOWARD THE SOUTH COUNTRY, AND DWELLED BETWEEN KADESH AND SHUR, AND SOJOURNED IN GERAR._ Abraham journeyed from thence. Whence? No place is mentioned in connection with the patriarch's name in the context immediately preceding. We must look back to Genesis 13:18; because all the transactions related in the intermediate chapters took place while Abraham had his headquarters established in "Mamre, which is in Hebron." His motive for removing might be a necessity to obtain fresh pastures; but considering it was immediately subsequent to the destruction of the plain, it probably was fear to dwell among the Canaanites. TOWARD THE SOUTH COUNTRY. The word Negeb, or 'south,' is used to describe that tract of country through which lay the ordinary caravan road between central Canaan and Egypt. He now returns to the continuation of his history, and proceeds to show what happened to Abraham; how he conducted himself, and how the Lord protected him; till the promised seed, the future source of the Church, should be born unto him. He also says, that Abraham came into the South country; not that he traveled beyond the limits of the inheritance given to him, but left his former abode, and went towards the South. 1-8 Crooked policy will not prosper: it brings ourselves and others into danger. God gives Abimelech notice of his danger of sin, and his danger of death for his sin. Every wilful sinner is a dead man, but Abimelech pleads ignorance. If our consciences witness, that, however we may have been cheated into a snare, we have not knowingly sinned against God, it will be our rejoicing in the day of evil. It is matter of comfort to those who are honest, that God knows their honesty, and will acknowledge it. It is a great mercy to be hindered from committing sin; of this God must have the glory. But if we have ignorantly done wrong, that will not excuse us, if we knowingly persist in it. He that does wrong, whoever he is, prince or peasant, shall certainly receive for the wrong which he has done, unless he repent, and, if possible, make restitution....
