_SO ABRAHAM PRAYED UNTO GOD: AND GOD HEALED ABIMELECH, AND HIS WIFE, AND HIS MAIDSERVANTS; AND THEY BARE CHILDREN._ So Abraham prayed unto God. Although the efficacy of prayer is not expressly mentioned until the Gospel age (Matthew 7:7; James 5:14-15), there are numerous remarkable instances of its power and influence recorded throughout the Old Testament History. The agency of Abraham being employed in intercessory prayer for the sick, the divine favour to him was manifested anew by an immediate answer in the restoration of Abimelech and his household; and the notice of the fact would tend to raise the patriarch in the estimation of the Gerar people, who would feel themselves laid under obligations for so important a service. 17._So Abraham prayed_. In two respects the wonderful favor of God towards Abraham was apparent; firsts that, with outstretched hand, He avenged the injury done to him; and, secondly, that, through Abraham’s prayer, He became pacified towards the house of Abimelech. It was necessary to declare, that the house of Abimelech had been healed in answer to Abraham’s prayers; in order that, by such a benefit, the inhabitants might be the more closely bound to him. GENESIS 20. ABRAHAM PASSES OFF SARAH AS HIS SISTER AT GERAR. The first complete narrative from E. The writer uses Elohim, but P's characteristics are absent. Phraseology as well as the use of Elohim instead of Yahweh forbid us to assign it to J, who has also a variant of the story (Genesis 12:1); contrast Genesis 20:13 with Genesis 12:11. Features which point to E are the phraseology, the representation of Abraham as a prophet (Genesis 20:7) and his home as in the Negeb (Genesis 20:1), also the speaking of God in a dream; Sarah is obviously of an age a
