_BUT ABIMELECH HAD NOT COME NEAR HER: AND HE SAID, LORD, WILT THOU SLAY ALSO A RIGHTEOUS NATION?_ Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? - х_ 'ADONAAY_ (H136), Lord: see the note at Genesis 15:2.] The use of this term shows that true religion still lingered in Gerar, as it appears from the case of Melchizedek to have done among a few of the native Canaanites; because Abimelech was evidently acquainted with the name and attributes of the Divine Being to whom he appealed as a worshipper; while the anxious enquiry, "Wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?" suggested, doubtless, by the recent awful fate of the cities of the plain, implied that in national character his subjects bore an advantageous contrast with the debased and idolatrous inhabitants of that land....

4._But Abimelech had not come near her_. Though Abraham had deprived himself of his wife, the Lord interposed in time to preserve her uninjured. When Moses previously relates, that she was taken away by Pharaoh, he does not say whether her chastity was assailed or not; but since the Lord then also declared himself the vindicator of her whom he now saved from dishonor, we ought not to doubt that her integrity was preserved both times. For why did he now forbid the king of Gerar to touch her, if he had previously suffered her to be corrupted in Egypt? We see, however, that when the Lord so defers his aid as not to stretch out his hand to the faithful, till they are in extreme peril, he shows the more clearly how admirable is his Providence. _Wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? _The explanation given by some, that Abimelech here compares himself with the men of Sodom, is perhaps too ref...

1-8 Crooked policy will not prosper: it brings ourselves and others into danger. God gives Abimelech notice of his danger of sin, and his danger of death for his sin. Every wilful sinner is a dead man, but Abimelech pleads ignorance. If our consciences witness, that, however we may have been cheated into a snare, we have not knowingly sinned against God, it will be our rejoicing in the day of evil. It is matter of comfort to those who are honest, that God knows their honesty, and will acknowledge it. It is a great mercy to be hindered from committing sin; of this God must have the glory. But if we have ignorantly done wrong, that will not excuse us, if we knowingly persist in it. He that does wrong, whoever he is, prince or peasant, shall certainly receive for the wrong which he has done, unless he repent, and, if possible, make restitution....

Phraseology as well as the use of Elohim instead of Yahweh forbid us to assign it to J, who has also a variant of the story (Genesis 12:1); contrast Genesis 20:13 with Genesis 12:11. Features which point to E are the phraseology, the representation of Abraham as a prophet (Genesis 20:7) and his home as in the Negeb (Genesis 20:1), also the speaking of God in a dream; Sarah is obviously of an age a
