Poor woman, she now early begins to reap the bitter fruits of her fraudulent device; she is obliged to part with her son for whom she planned it, never, probably, seeing him again; and he (Jacob) felt the retributive justice of heaven fall upon him heavily in his own future family. WHY SHOULD I BE DEPRIVED ... OF YOU BOTH? This refers to the law of the _ GO'EL_ (H1352), by which the nearest of kin would be obliged to avenge the death of Jacob upon his brother....

Thus he went in the way of Cain, who slew his brother, because he gained that acceptance with God of which he had rendered himself unworthy. Esau aimed to prevent Jacob or his seed from having the dominion, by taking away his life. Men may fret at God's counsels, but cannot change them. To prevent mischief, Rebekah warned Jacob of his danger, and advised him to withdraw for his safety. Verse Genesis 27:42. _DOTH COMFORT HIMSELF_, PURPOSING _TO KILL THEE._] מתנחם לך _mithnachem lecha_, which Houbigant renders _cogitat super te_, he thinks or meditates to kill thee. This sense is natural enough here, but it does not appear to be the meaning of the original; nor does Houbigant himself give it this sense, in his _Racines_ _Hebraiques_. There is no doubt that Esau, in his hatred to his brother, felt himself pleased with the thought that he should soon have the opportunity of avenging his wrongs....

There are doublets which point to the use of two sources. We naturally expect the blessing to follow at the end of Genesis 27:23, but it comes only in Genesis 27:27_ b_. Twice Jacob is questioned as to his identity, and Isaac is in one place deceived by touch (Genesis 27:21) in the other by smell (Genesis 27:27).
