_ESAU TOOK HIS WIVES OF THE DAUGHTERS OF CANAAN; ADAH THE DAUGHTER OF ELON THE HITTITE, AND AHOLIBAMAH THE DAUGHTER OF ANAH THE DAUGHTER OF ZIBEON THE HIVITE;_ Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan. The difference in the names of Esau's wives has given rise to various theories of explanation. Some suppose that the list in this chapter refers to wives quite different from those mentioned in Genesis 26:34; Genesis 28:9. Ewald and others maintain that there were more than three; because the name of Judith, who seems to have been the first that Esau married, is omitted in this register of his progeny, probably because she was childless; while that of Aholibamah is added as a fourth; and the suggestion has been also made that Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael, having died, Esau married her

Verse Genesis 36:2. _HIS WIVES_] It appears that Esau's wives went by very different names. _Aholibamah_ is named _Judith_, Genesis 26:34; _Adah_ is called _Bashemath_ in the same place; and she who is here called _Bashemath_ is called _Mahalath_, Genesis 28:9. These are variations which cannot be easily accounted for; and they are not of sufficient importance to engross much time. Of the Canaanites, the posterity of cursed Canaan, most of them were of them, though not all, the two following were, and so those, if different from them in Genesis 26:34, one of his wives was of the family of Ishmael, as after related: ADAH THE DAUGHTER OF ELON THE HITTITE; according to Jarchi and Aben Ezra, this is the same with Bashemath, Genesis 26:34; and that she had two names: AND AHOLIBAMAH THE DAUGHTER OF ANAH, THE DAUGHTER OF ZIBEON THE HIVITE; the daughter of the one, and the granddaughter of the other, it being usual in Scripture to call grandchildren children, for Zibeon and Anah were father and son, Genesis 36:24

GENESIS 36. EDOMITE GENEALOGIES, CHIEFTAINS, AND KINGS. This chapter is not a unity but a compilation with a very complicated literary history behind it. There is an element of P in it, but its extent, the degree in which it is a revision of earlier sources, and the allocation of the other matter, is very uncertain. The historical value of the chapter is great, but the genealogies and lists cannot be discussed here. Some points of interest may be mentioned. There is a strange discrepancy as to Esau's wives between Genesis 36:2; Genesis 26:34; Genesis 28:9. The same names largely recur in both lists, but in different relationships. In Genesis 3

ESAU TOOK HIS WIVES— It appears by comparing ch. Genesis 26:34. that these wives of Esau went under several names, as seems to have been a common custom in those days. It is of little importance to settle these names, and perhaps impossible at present. The word _daughter,_ in Scripture, is frequently used, like that of _brother,_ in a general sense, for a _grand-daughter,_ a _niece,_ &c. _Anah_ the _daughter_ of _Zibeon,_ should be read _the son;_ see Genesis 26:24 as several of the versions direct; if, which may probably be the case, the same name belongs not to two different persons of different sexes....
