_AND SAMLAH DIED, AND SAUL OF REHOBOTH BY THE RIVER REIGNED IN HIS STEAD._ Saul of Rehoboth by the river - rather, Rehoboth of the river; i:e., the Euphrates. The site of this place is supposed by Col. Chesney ('Euphrat. Exped,' 1:, p. 119) to be at Rahabeh, on the right bank, a little below the confluence of the Khabour. Bochart, Gesenius, and many others, fix on this town. There is another a few miles further down, on the opposite bank, called Rahabeh-Malik - i:e., 'royal,' to which Jewish writers assign the honour of being 'the city of Saul.' Whichever of these two places may be the Rehoboth of Saul, that king appears to have been a foreigner....

AND SAUL OF REHOBOTH [BY] THE RIVER REIGNED IN HIS STEAD; Rehoboth was one of the cities built by Ashur, Genesis 10:11; and was situated near the river Euphrates; and so the Targum of Jonathan calls it Rehoboth which is by Euphrates; but Jerom n, from Eusebius, takes it to be another city by a river in Edom, and says, that there was in his days a garrison in the country of Gabalena (a part of Idumea), a large village called by that name. n De loc. GENESIS 36. EDOMITE GENEALOGIES, CHIEFTAINS, AND KINGS. This chapter is not a unity but a compilation with a very complicated literary history behind it. There is an element of P in it, but its extent, the degree in which it is a revision of earlier sources, and the allocation of the other matter, is very uncertain. The historical value of the chapter is great, but the genealogies and lists cannot be discussed here. Some points of interest may be mentioned. There is a strange discrepancy as to Esau's wives between Genesis 36:2; Genesis 26:34; Genesis 28:9. The same names largely recur in both lists, but in different relationships. In Genesis 3

Kings of Edom 31. _any king_ From this verse we infer that the writer lived at a time subsequent to the foundation of the Israelite monarchy. The definition, however, of the date is not quite clear in the opinion of some scholars. It is simplest to render, "before there reigned a king for Israel," i.e. before the time of Saul. But it is noteworthy that LXX Cod. A renders, "before there reigned any king in Jerusalem." Dillmann translates "before an Israelite king reigned," i.e. over Edom, referring to the subjugation of the Edomites by David. The tradition shews that Edom had a settled constitution before Israel. In Scriptural terms Esau was "the elder." It is to be observed that the Edomite kings, (1) had different places of residence, (2) were not hereditary kings. THE GENERATIONS OF ESAU 'The amount of detail here arises from the fact that Edom was always counted Israel's brother, and of great importance in the history of Israel. The Horites (“cave-dwellers ") were originally in the mountainous country of Seir (Genesis 36:20); the Hebrews under Esau entered and amalgamated with them. Esau married the Horite Aholibamah, and his son Eliphaz, the Horite Timna. They then became rulers of Seir to Akaba; God gave it them as Canaan to Israel '(D.). See Deuteronomy 2:5....
