The list of the dukes is here resumed, with the names of their seats; but whereas there were fourteen enumerated in the former, there are only eleven mentioned in this. Kurtz supposes that in Genesis 36:15-19 'the original number of the tribes is given, possibly at the time when the princes created for themselves a center by the election of a king; whereas the concluding verses refer to the time of the historian.' Verse Genesis 36:40. _THESE ARE THE NAMES OF THE DUKES_ THAT CAME _OF ESAU_] These dukes did not govern the whole nation of the Idumeans, but they were chiefs in their respective _families_, in _their places _- the districts they governed, and to which they gave _their names_. Calmet thinks that those mentioned above were dukes in Edom or Idumea at the time of the exodus of Israel from Egypt....

GENESIS 36. EDOMITE GENEALOGIES, CHIEFTAINS, AND KINGS. This chapter is not a unity but a compilation with a very complicated literary history behind it. There is an element of P in it, but its extent, the degree in which it is a revision of earlier sources, and the allocation of the other matter, is very uncertain. The historical value of the chapter is great, but the genealogies and lists cannot be discussed here. Some points of interest may be mentioned. There is a strange discrepancy as to Esau's wives between Genesis 36:2; Genesis 26:34; Genesis 28:9. The same names largely recur in both lists, but in different relationships. In Genesis 3
