5._Wo to me! for I am undone. _The Prophet now relates how powerfully he was affected by that vision; namely that he was so terrified by seeing God; that he expected immediate destruction. He assigns the reason for believing that it is all over with him; _because_, says he, _I am a man of unclean lips _ I wonder why Jerome renders it, _because I was silent_; seeing that there is no ambiguity in the expression. דמה (_damah_) does indeed signify _to be silent_, but here the undoubted mark of a passive verb is added. This passage may likewise be rendered, _Wo to me! for I have been reduced to silence_. In the Scriptures _silence _is often taken for death and those who have been buried are said to have been _reduced to silence_. But as the meaning is the same, I will not dispute much about the translation. The Prophet therefore means, that he was so terrified as

ISAIAH 6. THE CALL OF ISAIAH. This chapter contains Isaiah's own account of his call to the prophetic office. Presumably it was written down some time after the event, but the interval need not have been long, nor have we any real reason for assuming that the account has been coloured by his later experience of failure. The view that he had already for some time been a prophet, and that this vision opens a new stage in his ministry, would deserve consideration only if the order of the prophecies was chronological. But this is demonstrably not the case. The chapter is of the highest importance, since it gives the true point of view for understanding the prophet.
