Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. 4._Thou shalt no more be called forsaken. _He meets a difficulty which might occur to the minds of believers, seeing that they were forsaken and abandoned, while at the same time they were called a “diadem” and a “crown.” Seeing that they were hated and abhorred by all nations, and sometimes even lay prostrate at the feet of their enemies, and no assistance of any kind was seen, it might appear ridiculous that they should receive these names, and thus be elevated to heaven and placed in the hand of God. 1-5 The Son of God here assures his church of his unfailing love, and his pleading for her under all trails and difficulties. She shall be called by a new name, a pleasant name, such as she was never called by before. The state of true religion in the world, before the preaching of the gospel, no man seemed to have any real concern for. Verse Isaiah 62:4. _THY LAND BEULAH_] בעולה _beulah, married_. In the prophets, a _desolate land_ is represented under the notion of _a_ _widow_; an _inhabited land_, under that of a _married woman_, who has both a _husband_ and _children_....

THOU SHALT NO MORE BE TERMED FORSAKEN - That is, thou shalt be no more so forsaken as to make such an I appellation proper. This refers to the new name which the prophet says Isaiah 62:2 will be conferred on her. NEITHER SHALL THY LAND - Thy country shall no more be so wasted that the term desolation (שׁממה _sh__e__mâmâh_, Greek ἔρημος _erēmos_) shall be properly applied to it. EXPOSITION ISAIAH 62:1 FURTHER GRACIOUS PROMISES MADE TO ISRAEL BY "THE SERVANT." Some regard the speaker in this chapter as Jehovah; some as the prophet, or the prophetical order; some as "the Servant." The last supposition appears to us the simplest and the best. The close connection with the preceding chapter is evident. If that then be, in the main, "a soliloquy of the Servant," this should he a continuation of the soliloquy. Israel is promised "righteousness," "glory," "a new name," a guard of angels, a time of peace and prosperity, deliverance from Babylon, and triumphant establishment in Zion under God's protection....

The prophet will not rest in his mission (_cf._ Isaiah 61:1) till Zion's triumph is resplendent, her brilliance dazzling kings and nations. Zion shall be as a beautiful crown which Yahweh takes in His hand to adorn Himself. Now she may well be named Forsaken, her land, Deserted; but then Yahweh, Israel's husband, shall restore her to His favour, and her name shall be My Delight, that of the land, Spouse.
