For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. FOR (AS) A YOUNG MAN MARRIETH A VIRGIN, (SO) SHALL THY SONS MARRY THEE. "Thy sons" - Lowth prefers changing the points, which are of no authority in Hebrew: 'thy builder' or 'restorer' ( bonayik (H1129) for baanaayik (H1121). The plural form, 'thy builders,' is used of God, to express His infinite fullness, as Hebrew in Isaiah 54:5, 'thy Maker is thy Husbands'), i:e., God: for in the parallel clause, and in Isaiah 62:4, God is implied as being "married" to her; whereas...

5._For as a young man marrieth a virgin. _This verse contains nothing more than an explanation and confirmation of the preceding verse. Now there appears to be a sort of contradiction in this respect, that in the latter clause he makes God the only Husband of the Church, while in the former clause he assigns to her many husbands. But the solution is easy; for, when this marriage of the Church is spoken of, there is but one Husband, that is, God, who always claims for himself that title; and that is fulfilled in Christ, to whom, as Paul says, the pastors “espouse the Church as a chaste virgin.” (2 Corinthians 11:2.) Yet this does not prevent the metaphor of marriage from being employed to describe that unity of faith which all the children of God have with their mother, the Church. She shall be called by a new name, a pleasant name, such as she was never called by before. The state of true religion in the world, before the preaching of the gospel, no man seemed to have any real concern for. Verse Isaiah 62:5. _FOR AS A YOUNG MAN_ - SO] The particles of comparison are not at present in the _Hebrew_ Text: but the _Septuagint, Syriac_, and _Chaldee_ seem to have read in their copies כ _caph_ prefixed to the verb, כי כיבעל _ki keyibal_, which seems to have been omitted by mistake of a transcriber, occasioned by the repetition of the same two letters. And before the verb in the second line a MS. adds כן _ken, so_; which the _Septuagint, Syriac_, and _Chaldee_ seem also to have had in their copies. In the third line of this verse the same MS. has in like manner וכמשוש _vechimsos_, and two MSS. and the _Babylonish Talmud_ כמשוש kimsos, adding the כ _caph_; and in the fourth line, the _Babylonish Talmud_ likewise adds כן _ken,_ _so_, before the verb. FOR AS A YOUNG MAN MARRIETH A VIRGIN - Roberts remarks on this, ‘In general no youth marries a widow. Such a thing I scarcely ever heard of (in India), nor will it ever be except under some very extraordinary circumstances, as in the case of a queen, princess, or great heiress. Even widowers also, if possible, always marry virgins.’ The idea here is, that Yahweh would have delight in his people, which would be properly represented by the affection which a young man has for his bride. EXPOSITION ISAIAH 62:1 FURTHER GRACIOUS PROMISES MADE TO ISRAEL BY "THE SERVANT." Some regard the speaker in this chapter as Jehovah; some as the prophet, or the prophetical order; some as "the Servant." The last supposition appears to us the simplest and the best. Zion shall be as a beautiful crown which Yahweh takes in His hand to adorn Himself. Now she may well be named Forsaken, her land, Deserted; but then Yahweh, Israel's husband, shall restore her to His favour, and her name shall be My Delight, that of the land, Spouse.
