I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Lest any should infer from , "who can how it?" that even the Lord does not know, and therefore cannot punish, the hidden treachery of the heart, He saith, "I the Lord search the heart," etc. (; ; ; ). We have just been pointed to the striking contrast between the conduct of the heathen and that of the backsliding men of Judah. The inspired orator's indignation swells as he thinks of the inveterateness and indelibleness of Judah's sin.
