But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. IF THEY HAD STOOD IN MY COUNSEL - (). THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED THEM FROM THEIR EVIL WAY - they would have given such counsels to the people as would have turned them from their sins (), and so would have averted punishment, (, "my word," etc.) Their not teaching the law in which God's counsel is set forth is one of the "fruits" by which they may be "known" not to be His prophets, though they boast of being so (Matthew 7:15)....

This verse is as it were an explanation of the former; for many might have been perplexed, if it had only been said to them, that there are none who are fit and legitimate teachers but those who had been sent and entrusted with what God had commanded.
