Jeremiah 50:32

_AND THE MOST PROUD SHALL STUMBLE AND FALL, AND NONE SHALL RAISE HIM UP: AND I WILL KINDLE A FIRE IN HIS CITIES, AND IT SHALL DEVOUR ALL ROUND ABOUT HIM._ No JFB commentary on this verse....

The Prophet continues the same subject: as then he had announced in God’s name that the time of visitation would come when God would rise up against the Chaldeans, he now adds, _stumble shall the proud, and fall _The verb כשל, _cashel, _means also to fall; but as it is added, ונפל _, vanuphel, and fall, _it ought to be rendered _stumble _here. _Stumble, _then, _shall the proud, and fall _— for the Prophet denotes a gradation. Some render the words, “Fall shall the proud and tumble down:_” _but more suitable is the rendering I have given, that the _proud would stumble, _and then that he _would fall. And no one, _he says, _shall raise him up _By these words, God intimates, that though Babylon had many nations under its authority, yet there would be no help given to it, when the time of visitation came. The Targum, as before, interprets it a wicked king; and Abarbinel understands it of Belshazzar particularly, who was slain the night that Babylon was taken. It may be understood of the whole kingdom and monarchy of Babylon, which was a superb state; but all its grandeur and glory were brought down and laid in the dust at once, as mystical Babylon will; when it will be said, "Babylon the great", the proud and the haughty, is fallen, Revelation 18:2; AND NONE SHALL RAISE HIM UP; the kingdom of Babylon shall not be restored train, nor the king of it have any successor, nor the city be rebuilt; compare with this Revelation 18:21;...

CHAPTER S 50-51 BABYLON These two final Chapter s contain a great prophecy concerning Babylon, her overthrow and doom. The fifty-first chapter closes with the statement “thus far are the words of Jeremiah.” There is a direct statement that Jeremiah wrote all these words. We find it at the close of Jeremiah 51:59. “Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.” It would be a brazen infidelity which says Jeremiah did not write all these words. Yet the almost universally accepted view of the critics is that these Chapter s cannot be the work of Jeremiah. The German infidel, Professor Eichhorn, the man who coined the phrase “higher criticism,” started this denial; Kuenen, Budde and others have followed in his steps. JEREMIAH 50:1 TO JEREMIAH 51:58. BABYLON. This long and monotonous prophecy, which is without order or logical development of ideas, is largely a compilation from the prophetic writings of Jeremiah and others (_cf., e.g.,_ Jeremiah 50:41 ff., Jeremiah 51:15). It presupposes the destruction of Jerusalem, apparently as a remote rather than a recent event. Its idea of Babylon is that of a cruel tyrant to be punished by Yahweh, not that of a Divinely commissioned agent of Yahweh's wrath against Israel, as Jeremiah teaches. We are not at liberty to make it contemporaneous with such exilic writings as Isaiah 13, 40-55, because
