_IN THE FULNESS OF HIS SUFFICIENCY HE SHALL BE IN STRAITS: EVERY HAND OF THE WICKED SHALL COME UPON HIM._ Shall be - rather, 'he is (feeleth) straitened' (Umbreit). The next clause explains in what respect. The English version is good sense: 'In the fullness, of him abundance he shall be reduced to straits.' WICKED - rather, 'the whole hand of the miserable х_ `AAMEEL_ (H6001)] (whom he had oppressed) cometh upon him;' namely, the sense of his having oppressed the poor, now in turn comes with all its power (hands) on him (Job 15:21). This causes his 'straitened' feeling even in prosperity (Umbreit). Or 'every head of those made miserable by him shall come upon him:' they all shall literally attack him to take revenge....

10-22 The miserable condition of the wicked man in this world is fully set forth. The lusts of the flesh are here called the sins of his youth. His hiding it and keeping it under his tongue, denotes concealment of his beloved lust, and delight therein. But He who knows what is in the heart, knows what is under the tongue, and will discover it. The love of the world, and of the wealth of it, also is wickedness, and man sets his heart upon these. Verse Job 20:22. _IN THE FULLNESS OF HIS SUFFICIENCY HE SHALL BE IN_ _STRAITS_] This is a fine saying, and few of the menders of Job's text have been able to improve the version. It is literally true of every great, rich, wicked man; he has no God, and anxieties and perplexities torment him, notwithstanding he has his portion in this life. _EVERY HAND OF THE WICKED SHALL COME UPON HIM._] All kinds of misery shall be his portion. _Coverdale_ translates: _Though he had_ _plenteousnesse of every thinge, yet was he poore; and, therefore,_ _he is but a wretch on every syde_....

HE SHALL BE IN STRAITS - Either by the dread of calamity, or because calamity shall come suddenly upon him, and his property shall be swept away. When everything seemed to be abundant he should be reduced to want. EVERY HAND OF THE WICKED SHALL COME UPON HIM - Margin, “or, troublesome” The meaning is, that all that the wretched or miserable endure should come suddenly upon him. Rosenmuller suggests, however, that it means that all the poor, and all who had been oppressed and robbed by him, would suddenly come upon him to recover their own property, and would scatter all that he had. The general meaning is clear, that he would be involved in misery from every quarter, or on every hand....

EXPOSITION JOB 20:1 Zophar's second speech is even more harsh than his first (Job 11:1.). He adds coarseness and rudeness to his former vehement hostility (Job 20:7, Job 20:15). His whole discourse is a covert denunciation of Job as a wicked man and a hypocrite (verses 5, 12, 19, 29), deservedly punished by God for a life of crime.
