1-14 Job contrasts his present condition with his former honour and authority. What little cause have men to be ambitious or proud of that which may be so easily lost, and what little confidence is to be put in it! We should not be cast down if we are despised, reviled, and hated by wicked men. We should look to Jesus, who endured the contradiction of sinners....

Verse Job 30:12. _UPON_ MY _RIGHT_ HAND _RISE THE YOUTH_] The word פרחח _pirchach_, which we translate _youth_, signifies properly _buds_, or the _buttons_ of _trees_. Mr. _Good_ has _younglings_. _Younkers_ would be better, were it not too colloquial. _THEY PUSH AWAY MY FEET_] They trip up my heels, or they in effect trample me under their feet. They rush upon and overwhelm me. They are violently incensed against me. They roll themselves upon me, התגלגלו _hithgalgalu, velut unda impellit undam_, as waves of the sea which wash the sand from under the feet, and then swamp the man to the bottom; see Job 30:14....

UPON MY RIGHT HAND RISE THE YOUTH - The right hand is the place of honor, and therefore it was felt to be a greater insult that they should occupy even that place. The word rendered “youth” (פרחח _pirchach_) occurs nowhere else in the Hebrew Scriptures. It is probably from פרח _pârach_, “to sprout, germinate, blossom”; and hence, would mean “a progeny,” and would be probably applied to beasts. It is rendered by Jerome, “calamities;” by the Septuagint, “Upon the right hand of the progeny, or brood (βλαστοῦ _blastou_), they rise,” where Schleusner conjectures that βλαστοι_ _blastoi_ should be read, “On the right hand rise a brood or progeny.” Umbreit renders it, “eine Brut ... a brood.” So Rosenmuller, Noyes, and Schultens. JOB 30. JOB'S PRESENT MISERY. As the text stands at present, Job begins by complaining that the very abjects of society now despise him. Many scholars, however, detach Job 30:2 as a misplaced section of the description of the outcasts, which we have already met in Job 24:5 f. When we look at the passage apart from Job 30:1, the impression it makes is not one of contempt for their abject condition, but of pity for their misery. Hence the greater part would have been better suited to one of Job's delineations of human wretchedness than to the picture he is painting of his own distress, from which he is diverted at a surprisingly early point (Peake).
