Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. THEN WHEN JESUS CAME, HE FOUND THAT HE HAD LAIN IN THE GRAVE FOUR DAYS. If he died on the day that the tidings came of his illness; if he was, according to the Jewish custom, buried the same day (see the note at ; and Acts 5:5; ); and if Jesus, after two days' further stay in Peraea, set out on the day following for Bethany (some ten hours' journey) - that would make out the four days, the first and last being incomplete. Verse John 11:17. _HE HAD_ LAIN _IN THE GRAVE FOUR DAYS ALREADY._] Our Lord probably left _Bethabara_ the day, or the day after, Lazarus died. He came to _Bethany_ three days after; and it appears that Lazarus had been buried about four days, and consequently that he had been put in the grave the day or day after he died. Though it was the Jewish custom to embalm their dead, yet we find, from John 11:39, that he had not been embalmed; and God wisely ordered this, that the miracle might appear the more striking....

IN THE GRAVE - It was sometimes the custom to embalm the dead, but in this case it does not seem to have been done. He was probably buried soon after death....

EXPOSITION JOHN 11:1 7. _Christ the Antagonist of death—a victory of love and power_._ _The narrative of this chapter is a further advance in the proof that the unbelief of the Jews was aggravated by the greatness of the revelation. The issue of his sublime and culminating act of power, of his supreme and self-revealing work of transcendent tenderness and beauty, was a deeper and wilder passion of hatred. The evangelist completes his series of seven great miracles with one that in true and believing minds, evokes a new sense of the glory of God. This great last sign corresponds with the first (John it.) by being enacted amid the domestic and family life of a small and insignificant town, and also by express reference to the veritable manifestation involved in it of the δόξα Θεοῦ, on which we have frequently commented. The Alexandrian copy, and all the Oriental versions add, "to Bethany"; though it seems by what follows, that he was not come to the town itself, but near it; and it looks as if it was not far from Lazarus's grave; and it was usual to bury without the city; and here he had intelligence of his, Lazarus's, death, and how long he had been dead: FOR HE FOUND HE HAD LAIN IN THE GRAVE FOUR DAYS ALREADY; it is very likely that he died the same day that Mary and Martha sent to Christ to acquaint him with his sickness, and the same day he was buried; for the Jews used to bury the same day a person died, and so they do now: and after Christ had this account, he stayed two days where he was, and on the third day, he proposed to his disciples to go into Judea; and very probably on that, or on the next day, which was the fourth, they set out and came to Bethany; John

JOHN 11. THE RAISING OF LAZARAS. John 11:1. The Miracle. The withdrawal to Peræ a is brought to a sudden end by the illness of Jesus-' friend Lazarus. Bethany, to distinguish it from the Bethany beyond Jordan (John 1:28), is described as the home of Mary and Martha, the younger sister being the better known in Christian tradition as the woman who anointed the Lord. The author assumes knowledge of the story, which he does not relate till a subsequent chapter. The sisters send to tell Jesus that His friend is ill. He announces that the illness is not fatal, but will prove (how, is not said) the occasion of the showing forth of God's glory.
