(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) (IT WAS THAT MARY WHICH ANOINTED THE LORD WITH OINTMENT, AND WIPED HIS FEET WITH HER HAIR, WHOSE BROTHER LAZARUS WAS SICK.) The fact here referred to, though not recorded by our Evangelist until , etc., was so well known in the teaching of all the churches, according to our Lord's prediction (see the note at ), that it is here alluded to by anticipation, as the most natural way of identifying her; and Mary is first named, though the younger, as the more distinguished of the two. She "anointed THE LORD," says the Evangelist-led doubtless to the use of this term here, as He was about to exhibit Him illustriously as the Lord of Life....

2._It was that Mary who anointed the Lord. _It is a similar display of ignorance, to imagine that this _Mary_, _the sister of Lazarus_, was that woman of wicked and infamous life, who is mentioned by Luke, (Luke 7:37.) This mistake was occasioned by the _anointing_; as if it were not evident enough that Christ was anointed on various occasions, and even at different places. _The woman who was a sinner_, of whom Luke gives an account, _anointed _Christ at Jerusalem, where he dwelt; but Mary afterwards _anointed _him at Bethany, which was her own village. The past tense employed by the Evangelist, _who _anointed, must be referred, not to the time of the occurrence which he is now relating, but to the time when he wrote; as if he had said, “It was this Mary who afterwards poured on the head of Christ the _ointment_, on account of which a murmuring

Verse John 11:2. _IT WAS_ THAT _MARY WHICH ANOINTED_] There is much disagreement between learned men relative to the two anointings of our Lord, and the persons who performed these acts. The various conjectures concerning these points the reader will find in the notes on Matthew 26:7, c., but particularly at the end of that chapter. EXPOSITION JOHN 11:1 7. _Christ the Antagonist of death—a victory of love and power_._ _The narrative of this chapter is a further advance in the proof that the unbelief of the Jews was aggravated by the greatness of the revelation. The issue of his sublime and culminating act of power, of his supreme and self-revealing work of transcendent tenderness and beauty, was a deeper and wilder passion of hatred. The evangelist completes his series of seven great miracles with one that in true and believing minds, evokes a new sense of the glory of God. This great last sign corresponds with the first (John it.) by being enacted amid the domestic and family life of a small and insignificant town, and also by express reference to the veritable manifestation involved in it of the δόξα Θεοῦ, on which we have frequently commented. IT WAS [THAT] MARY WHICH ANOINTED THE LORD WITH OINTMENT,.... Not the woman in Luke 7:37, as some have thought, whose name is not mentioned, and which history is not related by John at all: but Mary in John 12:3, who is both mentioned by name, and along with Lazarus her brother, and with whom all the circumstances of the affair suit; and though the fact was not yet done, yet John writing many years after it was done, and when it was well known, proleptically, and in a parenthesis, takes notice of it here: AND WIPED HIS FEET WITH HER HAIR; instead of a napkin, after she had anointed them with oil; Luke 7:37, John 12:3....

JOHN 11. THE RAISING OF LAZARAS. John 11:1. The Miracle. The withdrawal to Peræ a is brought to a sudden end by the illness of Jesus-' friend Lazarus. Bethany, to distinguish it from the Bethany beyond Jordan (John 1:28), is described as the home of Mary and Martha, the younger sister being the better known in Christian tradition as the woman who anointed the Lord. The author assumes knowledge of the story, which he does not relate till a subsequent chapter. The sisters send to tell Jesus that His friend is ill.
