John 14:13

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. AND WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK IN MY NAME - as Mediator, THAT WILL I DO - as Head and Lord of the Kingdom of God. This comprehensive premise is repeated emphatically in the following verse....

13._And whatever you ask in my name, that I will do. _By these words He plainly declares that he will be the Author of all that shall be done by the hands of the Apostles. But it may be asked, was he not even then the Mediator in whose name men ought to pray to the Father? I reply, he plainly discharged the office of Mediator, ever since he entered into the heavenly sanctuary; as we shall afterwards repeat at the proper place. _That the Father may be glorified in the Son. _This passage agrees with what Paul says, That every tongue may confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father, (Philippians 2:11.) The end of all things is the sanctification of the name of God; but here the true method of sanctifying it is declared; that is, _in the Son_, and _by the Son_. 12-17 Whatever we ask in Christ's name, that shall be for our good, and suitable to our state, he shall give it to us. To ask in Christ's name, is to plead his merit and intercession, and to depend upon that plea. The gift of the Spirit is a fruit of Christ's mediation, bought by his merit, and received by his intercession. The word used here, signifies an advocate, counsellor, monitor, and comforter. He would abide with the disciples to the end of time; his gifts and graces would encourage their hearts. The expressions used here and elsewhere, plainly denote a person, and the office itself includes all the Divine perfections. The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed upon the disciples of Christ, and not on the world. This is the favour God bears to his chosen. As the source of holiness and happiness, the Holy Spirit will abide with every believer for ever....

Verse John 14:13. _WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK IN MY NAME_] To enable you to perform these miracles, and to convert souls, may be granted you. Besides, by going unto the Father, I shall receive the Holy Spirit, and send down his abundant influences into the hearts of those who believe....

WHATSOEVER YE SHALL ASK - This promise referred particularly to the apostles in their work of spreading the gospel; it is, however, true of all Christians, if what they ask is in faith, and according to the will of God, James 1:6; 1 John 5:14. IN MY NAME - This is equivalent to saying on my account, or for my sake. If a man who has money in a bank authorizes us to draw it, we are said to do it in his name. If a son authorizes us to apply to his father for aid because we are his friends, we do it in the name of the son, and the favor will be bestowed on us from the regard which the parent has to his son, and through him to all his friends. This is a chapter which I suppose most of us know by heart, full of comfort, a very river of delight. Remember that our Lord spoke this to his own beloved ones to the inner circle. It was not addressed to the general public. It is not a sermon to the world. It is a discourse to those who had lived with him, and were now sorrowing because he was about to leave them by a cruel death. John 14:1 takes up the thoughts of the previous paragraph, not of the last verse. The thoughts of separation and treachery had led to perplexity, if not despair.
