8-14 Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet, as Manoah, have believed. Good men are more careful and desirous to know the duty to be done by them, than to know the events concerning them: duty is ours, events are God's. God will guide those by his counsel, who desire to know their duty, and apply to him to teach them. Pious parents, especially, will beg Divine assistance. The angel repeats the directions he had before given. There is need of much care for the right ordering both of ourselves and our children, that we may be duly separate from the world, and living sacrifices to the Lord....

Compare Numbers 6:4. In both passages the vine is described by the somewhat unusual though more accurate term, “vine of the wine” - the grape-bearing vine - to distinguish it from the wild cucumber vine 2 Kings 4:39, or other plants to which the name vine was applied....

EXPOSITION JUDGES 13:1 DID EVIL AGAIN. It by no means follows from this phrase that this chapter is in direct chronological sequence to the preceding The scene is shifted to the tribe of Dan, and to the Philistines on the west, and there is nothing to guide us as to the exact time when the things narrated occurred. But the end of the forty years probably coincided with the judgeship of Samuel; for there was no complete deliverance in the time of Samson, only occasional cheeks to the Philistine domination (see Judges 13:5). In Joshua 15:33 and 2 Chronicles 11:16 it is no longer Danite, but Judahite, evidently because the Danites of the town had moved to the north (Judges 18). Judges 13:3. COMMANDED. forbade. The verb _zivvah_ is. Homonym here and Deuteronomy 4:23, where it is correctly rendered "forbid". Elsewhere "command"....

_eat … of the vine_ i.e. fresh or dried grapes, Numbers 6:3; 1 Samuel 25:18; Jeremiah 31:29 f. etc. Not merely intoxicants, but anything to do with the vine is forbidden, for the reason suggested on Judges 13:4; cf. the prohibition laid upon the Roman Flamen Dialis, who was not allowed even to walk under a trellised vine (Plutarch, _Quaest. Rom._, 112). Similarly the Rechabites not only eschewed wine but planted no vineyards; their abstinence, however, was a protest in favour of nomadic as against settled life, Jeremiah 35:6-9.
