Judges 6:9

7-10 They cried to God for a deliverer, and he sent them a prophet to teach them. When God furnishes a land with faithful ministers, it is a token that he has mercy in store for it. He charges them with rebellion against the Lord; he intends to bring them to repentance. Repentance is real when the sinfulness of sin, as disobedience to God, is chiefly lamented....

AND I DELIVERED YOU OUT OF THE HAND OF THE EGYPTIANS,.... Even after they were brought out of Egypt, when the Egyptians pursued after them, and overtook them at the Red sea; where they were in the utmost distress, and the Lord wrought salvation for them, gave them a passage through it, and destroyed the Egyptians in it: AND OUT OF THE HAND OF ALL THAT OPPRESSED YOU: the Amalekites who made war with them at Rephidim, Sihon, and Og, kings of the Amorites, who came out to fight with them, and oppose their passage through their land into Canaan, and the kings of the Canaanites also, who combined against them: AND DRAVE THEM OUT FROM BEFORE YOU, AND GAVE YOU THEIR LAND: not only the land of Sihon and Og, but the whole land of Canaan, out of which more properly the inhabitants of it may be said to be driven....

A second writer (probably E) introduces a prophet who reproves Israel for disloyalty and ingratitude to Yahweh their God. The brief speech is a torso. Reflective rather than prophetic, it opens impressively, but ends abruptly, like a sermon without application; and then one of the main traditions begins....

_that oppressed you_ See on Judges 2:18; _and drave them out_cf. Exodus 34:11 JE, Joshua 24:18 E. Judges 6:8-9 are repeated in 1 Samuel 10:18, possibly copied from here. The aim of Judges 6:7 is to enforce the principle that reformation must precede deliverance. But the prophet has hardly reached this point when his speech is abruptly broken off, and one of the main narratives begins (11 24). GIDEON AND THE MIDIANITES The story of Gideon, which runs from Judges 6:1 to Judges 8:33, is more detailed than that of Deborah and Barak; and, from the details, it would appear that different traditions have been used. Gideon, at the bidding of an angel, calls his clan together, and after reducing them to 300 men, and receiving the encouragement of a dream, surrounds the camp of the Midianites and throws them into a panic. The Ephraimites complete the defeat. The two kings of Midian are then pursued beyond Jordan and slain. Gideon is offered the kingdom, but refuses it, and lives to old age in honour and peace. 1-6.
