_NO MEAT OFFERING, WHICH YE SHALL BRING UNTO THE LORD, SHALL BE MADE WITH LEAVEN: FOR YE SHALL BURN NO LEAVEN, NOR ANY HONEY, IN ANY OFFERING OF THE LORD MADE BY FIRE._ No leaven, nor any honey. Leaven [being the symbol of _ KAKIA_ (G2549) and _ PONEERIA_ (G4189)] was not allowable in meat offerings, the value of which, being thank offerings, consisted in their being expressive of _ EILIKRINEIA_ (G1505), sincerity and _ ALEETHEIA_ (G225), truth; _ AZUMA_ (G106), unleaven was emblematic of these qualities (1 Corinthians 5:8). 11._No meat-offering, which ye shall bring. _God here forbids leavened cakes to be offered to Him, by which rite the ancients were taught that God’s service is corrupted if any strange invention be mingled with it. Nor can it be doubted but that. Christ alluded to this when He warned His disciples to “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees,” (Matthew 16:11;) understanding by that word the fictions whereby they had corrupted religion. The eating of leaven was forbidden in the Passover for another reason, viz., that they might remember their sudden departure, or rather flight, in which there had been no time to prepare provisions for their journey. Although Paul extends it even further, viz., that believers should abstain from all “leaven of malice and wickedness.” (1 Corinthians 5:8.) It is clear, however, that in this general

1-11 Meat-offerings may typify Christ, as presented to God for us, and as being the Bread of life to our souls; but they rather seem to denote our obligation to God for the blessings of providence, and those good works which are acceptable to God. The term "meat" was, and still is, properly given to any kind of provision, and the greater part of this offering was to be eaten for food, not burned. These meat-offerings are mentioned after the burnt-offerings: without an interest in the sacrifice of Christ, and devotedness of heart to God, such services cannot be accepted. Leaven is the emblem of pride, malice, and hypocrisy, and honey of sensual pleasure. AS FOR THE OBLATION OF THE FIRSTFRUITS - Rather, As an oblation of firstfruits. The words refer to the leaven and honey mentioned in Leviticus 2:11 which might be offered among the firstfruits and tithes (Deuteronomy 26:2, Deuteronomy 26:12; compare 2 Chronicles 31:5). Honey, being used to produce fermentation, and leaven (or, a small piece of fermented dough) were excluded because fermentation was an apt symbol of the working of corruption in the human heart....

EXPOSITION THE MEAT OFFERING. The regulation of the burnt offering as a Levitical institution is immediately followed by a similar regulation of the meat offering, consisting of flour and oil, with salt and frankincense, and usually accompanied by the drink offering of wine. The sacrifice of the animal in the burnt offering had represented the entire surrender of the offerer's will and life to God; the presentation of the fruits and products of the earth in the meat offering represents man's gift of homage, whereby he acknowledges God's sovereignty over all things and over himself, by offering to him a portion of that which he had graciously bestowed in abundance. The offering might be in the form of thin wafers, or of girdle cakes (a baking pan is a flat plate or grid), or small puddings (in which case the oil is necessary as flavouring) whichever form is most convenient in view of the worshipper's _mé nage._ Leaven (see Exodus 23:18), like honey, will set up fermentation, or go sour. For this reason it is, perhaps, that milk is never allowed in offerings. Honey would also be unfamiliar to nomads; contrast Ezekiel 16:19.
