1-11 Meat-offerings may typify Christ, as presented to God for us, and as being the Bread of life to our souls; but they rather seem to denote our obligation to God for the blessings of providence, and those good works which are acceptable to God. The term "meat" was, and still is, properly given to any kind of provision, and the greater part of this offering was to be eaten for food, not burned. These meat-offerings are mentioned after the burnt-offerings: without an interest in the sacrifice of Christ, and devotedness of heart to God, such services cannot be accepted. Leaven is the emblem of pride, malice, and hypocrisy, and honey of sensual pleasure. The former are directly opposed to the graces of humility, love, and sincerity, which God approves; the latter takes men from the exercises of devotion, and the practice of good works. The four kinds of bread and the three cooking utensils which are mentioned in this section were probably such as were in common use in the daily life of the Israelites; and there appears no reason to doubt that they were such as are still used in the East. The variety of the offerings was most likely permitted to suit the different circumstances of the worshippers. The regulation of the burnt offering as a Levitical institution is immediately followed by a similar regulation of the meat offering, consisting of flour and oil, with salt and frankincense, and usually accompanied by the drink offering of wine. The sacrifice of the animal in the burnt offering had represented the entire surrender of the offerer's will and life to God; the presentation of the fruits and products of the earth in the meat offering represents man's gift of homage, whereby he acknowledges God's sovereignty over all things and over himself, by offering to him a portion of that which he had graciously bestowed in abundance. The offering might be in the form of thin wafers, or of girdle cakes (a baking pan is a flat plate or grid), or small puddings (in which case the oil is necessary as flavouring) whichever form is most convenient in view of the worshipper's _mé nage._ Leaven (see Exodus 23:18), like honey, will set up fermentation, or go sour. For this reason it is, perhaps, that milk is never allowed in offerings. Honey would also be unfamiliar to nomads; contrast Ezekiel 16:19. Salt, as a relish, is also necessary for its purifying effect, and as a symbol of the covenant (Numbers 18:19 *)....

After the general description of Leviticus 2:1, three methods of preparing the Meal-Offering are specified. It may be (1) baken in the oven (Leviticus 2:4), or (2) on a flat plate (Leviticus 2:5, mg. of R.V. and A.V.), or (3) in a frying pan (Leviticus 2:7). In all cases the material is the same; fine flour and oil, and the priest is to treat it in the same way (Leviticus 2:9 repeat the directions of Leviticus 2:2)....

THE MEAL OFFERING The rendering of AV MEAT OFFERING is liable to misunderstanding, as meat now suggests flesh meat. But this is a vegetable, or bloodless, sacrifice, a consecration to God of the produce of the field. Its principal constituent is fine flour, which may be presented either raw (Leviticus 2:1), or baked into cakes in the oven (Leviticus 2:4), or in a pan (Leviticus 2:5), or boiled in a pot (Leviticus 2:7).
