13._And every oblation of thy meat-offering. _The reason for salting the victims was very similar, viz., that God’s service might not be without savor; but the true seasoning which gives grace to sacrifices is found nowhere except in God’s word. Verse Leviticus 2:13. _WITH ALL THINE OFFERINGS THOU SHALT OFFER SALT._] SALT was the opposite to _leaven_, for it preserved from _putrefaction_ and _corruption_, and signified the _purity_ and _persevering fidelity_ that were necessary in the worship of God. Every thing was seasoned with it, to signify the purity and perfection that should be extended through every part of the Divine service, and through the hearts and lives of God's worshippers. It was called the _salt of the covenant of God_, because as salt is incorruptible, so was the covenant made with Abram, Isaac, Jacob, and the patriarchs, relative to the redemption of the world by the incarnation and death of Jesus Christ. WITH ALL THINE OFFERINGS THOU SHALT OFFER SALT - Not only every מנחה _mı̂nchāh_, but every animal offering was to be accompanied by salt. It was the one symbol which was never absent from the altar of burnt-offering, showing the imperishablness of the love of Yahweh for His people. In its unalterable nature, it is the contrary of leaven (yeast). The Arabs are said to retain in common use the expression, “a covenant of salt;” and the respect they pay to bread and salt in their rites of hospitality is well known....

EXPOSITION THE MEAT OFFERING. The regulation of the burnt offering as a Levitical institution is immediately followed by a similar regulation of the meat offering, consisting of flour and oil, with salt and frankincense, and usually accompanied by the drink offering of wine. The sacrifice of the animal in the burnt offering had represented the entire surrender of the offerer's will and life to God; the presentation of the fruits and products of the earth in the meat offering represents man's gift of homage, whereby he acknowledges God's sovereignty over all things and over himself, by offering to him a portion of that which he had graciously bestowed in abundance. The offering might be in the form of thin wafers, or of girdle cakes (a baking pan is a flat plate or grid), or small puddings (in which case the oil is necessary as flavouring) whichever form is most convenient in view of the worshipper's _mé nage._ Leaven (see Exodus 23:18), like honey, will set up fermentation, or go sour. For this reason it is, perhaps, that milk is never allowed in offerings. Honey would also be unfamiliar to nomads; contrast Ezekiel 16:19.
