21-34 A despised gospel will go where it will be better received. One of the rulers of a synagogue earnestly besought Christ for a little daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. Another cure was wrought by the way. We should do good, not only when in the house, but when we walk by the way, Deuteronomy 6:7. It is common with people not to apply to Christ till they have tried in vain all other helpers, and find them, as certainly they will, physicians of no value. Some run to diversions and gay company; others plunge into business, or even into intemperance; others go about to establish their own righteousness, or torment themselves by vain superstitions. Many perish in these ways; but none will ever find rest to the soul by such devices; while those whom Christ heals of the disease of sin, find in themselves an entire change for the better. Verse 31. _THOU SEEST THE MULTITUDE THRONGING THEN_, c.] Many _touch_ Jesus who are not _healed_ by him: the reason is, they do it not by _faith_, through a _sense_ of their _wants_, and a _conviction_ of his _ability_ and _willingness_ to save them. Faith conveys the virtue of Christ into the soul, and _spiritual health_ is the immediate consequence of this received virtue....

Mark 5:23 LIETH AT THE POINT OF DEATH - Is dying; in the last agonies. Mark 5:26 HAD SUFFERED MANY THINGS - Had resorted to many things painful, by the direction of the physicians, in order to be healed. Mark 5:27 CAME IN THE PRESS BEHIND - In the crowd that pressed upon him. This was done to avoid being noticed. It was an act of faith.

EXPOSITION MARK 5:1 AND THEY CAME TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA. The other side of the sea would be the south-east side of the sea. INTO THE COUNTRY OF THE GADARENES, or rather, _Gerasenes_,_ _which is now generally admitted to be the true reading, from Gerasa, Gersa, or Kersa. There was another Gerasa, situated at some distance from the sea, on the borders of Arabia Petraea. The ruins of the Gerasa, here referred to, have been recently discovered by Dr. Thomson, ('The Land and the Book'). Immediately over this spot is a lofty mountain, in which are ancient tombs; and from this mountain there is an almost perpendicular declivity, literally (κρημνός) corresponding accurately to what is required by the description in the narrative of the miracle. The stilling of the tempest, the healing of the demoniac and of the woman, and the raising of Jairus-' daughter form one of the most graphic sections of Mk.'s narrative. These stories have clearly been often told, and the evangelist delights to tell them. They seem to rest on unmistakable history. Thus the reference to the other little boats (Mark 4:36) reproduces an insignificant detail that naturally remained in the memory of an eye-witness (_cf._ Wellhausen).
