And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. AND HE TOOK THE DAMSEL BY THE HAND [AS HE DID PETER'S MOTHER-IN-LAW (MARK 1:31 )] AND SAID UNTO HER, TALITHA CUMI. The words are Aramaic, or Syro-Chaldaic, the then language of Palestine. Mark loves to give such wonderful words just as they were spoken. See Mark 7:34; Mark 14:36. 41._And he took hold of her hand, and said to her _Luke 8:54._And he took hold of her hand, and cried _Though naturally this _cry _was of no avail for recalling the senses of the deceased young woman, yet Christ intended to give a magnificent display of the power of his voice, that he might more fully accustom men to listen to his doctrine. It is easy to learn from this the great efficacy of the voice of Christ, which reaches even to the dead, and exerts a quickening influence on death itself. Accordingly, Luke says that _her spirit returned, _or, in other words, that immediately on being called, it obeyed the command of Christ....

35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to life by a word of power. Such is the gospel call to those who are by nature dead in trespasses and sins. It is by the word of Christ that spiritual life is given. All who saw it, and heard of it, admired the miracle, and Him that wrought it. Though we cannot now expect to have our dead children or relatives restored, we may hope to find comfort under our trials....

Verse Mark 5:41. _TALITHA CUMI_] [Syriac], This is mere _Syriac_, the proper translation of which the evangelist has given. The Codex Bezae has a very odd and unaccountable reading here, ραββι θαβιτα κουμι, _My master. Damsel arise. Suidas_ quotes this place under the word αββακουμ thus ταληθα κουμ. κουμ is the reading of several ancient MSS., but it is certainly a faulty one....

Mark 5:23 LIETH AT THE POINT OF DEATH - Is dying; in the last agonies. Mark 5:26 HAD SUFFERED MANY THINGS - Had resorted to many things painful, by the direction of the physicians, in order to be healed. Mark 5:27 CAME IN THE PRESS BEHIND - In the crowd that pressed upon him. This was done to avoid being noticed. It was an act of faith.

EXPOSITION MARK 5:1 AND THEY CAME TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA. The other side of the sea would be the south-east side of the sea. INTO THE COUNTRY OF THE GADARENES, or rather, _Gerasenes_,_ _which is now generally admitted to be the true reading, from Gerasa, Gersa, or Kersa. There was another Gerasa, situated at some distance from the sea, on the borders of Arabia Petraea. The ruins of the Gerasa, here referred to, have been recently discovered by Dr. Thomson, ('The Land and the Book'). Immediately over this spot is a lofty mountain, in which are ancient tombs; and from this mountain there is an almost perpendicular declivity, literally (κρημνός) corresponding accurately to what is required by the description in the narrative of the miracle. AND SAID UNTO HER; in the Syriac language, which was then commonly spoken by the Jews, and well understood: hence the Syriac version expresses the following words without an interpretation, TALITHA CUMI. The Ethiopic version reads it, "Tabitha Cumi"; and so do some Greek copies, and Latin versions, taking it to be the same word as in Acts 9:36 whereas that signifies "Dorcas, a roe"; but this word is of another signification, as here explained, WHICH IS, BEING INTERPRETED, DAMSEL (I SAY UNTO THEE) ARISE. The phrase, "I say unto thee", is no part of the interpretation of the above Syriac words; but is added, by the evangelist, as being what was expressed by Christ at the same time, signifying
