The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. THE WOMAN WAS A GREEK, [ Helleenis (G1674)] - that is, 'a Gentile,' as in the margin; a Syrophoenician by nation-so called as inhabiting the Phoenician tract of Syria. Juvenal uses the same term, as was remarked by Justin Martyr and Tertullian. Matthew calls her "a woman of Canaan" - a more intelligible description to his Jewish readers (cf. Judges 1:30; Judges 1:32-7). 24-30 Christ never put any from him that fell at his feet, which a poor trembling soul may do. As she was a good woman, so a good mother. This sent her to Christ. His saying, Let the children first be filled, shows that there was mercy for the Gentiles, and not far off. She spoke, not as making light of the mercy, but magnifying the abundance of miraculous cures among the Jews, in comparison with which a single cure was but as a crumb. Thus, while proud Pharisees are left by the blessed Saviour, he manifests his compassion to poor humbled sinners, who look to him for children's bread. He still goes about to seek and save the lost....

Verse 26. _THE WOMAN WAS A GREEK_] Rosenmuller has well observed, that all heathens or idolaters were called Ἑλληνες, _Greeks_, by the Jews; whether they were Parthians, Medes, Arabs, Indians, or AEthiopians. Jews and Greeks divided the whole world at this period....

THE HEALING OF THE GREEK WOMAN'S DAUGHTER. Jesus now leaves Galilee and withdraws to Gentile districts, not to evangelize them, but to avoid Herod and the Pharisees, and to train the Twelve. A Greek, _i.e._ a pagan, woman discovers Him, and requests Him to heal her daughter. Jesus asserts His conviction that His mission is to the Jews. The assertion is somewhat harsh, only softened by the diminutive little dogs, _i.e._ household dogs. This must be original. The woman's wit is seen in the way she catches up and builds on the very word which Jesus uses. If Jesus said dogs and the woman changed it to little dogs, the repartee is dulled. Mt. says the woman's request was granted because of her faith. Mk. implies that Jesus yielded out of admiration for the quickness of her answer.
