37._He hath done all things well. _Matthew, after collecting many miracles, concludes by saying that _the multitudes wondered, and glorified the God of Israel; _that is, because God, taking unusual methods of illustrating his power, had called up the remembrance of his covenant. But the words of Mark contain perhaps an implied contrast; for the reports concerning Christ were various, and the word _multitude _or _crowd _( ὄχλος) may be intended to mean that it was only wicked and malicious persons who slandered his actions, since all that he did was so far from exposing him to calumny that it deserved the highest praise. But we know, and it is what nature teaches us, that nothing is more unjust than to make the bestowal of favors an occasion of envy and ill-will....

31-37 Here is a cure of one that was deaf and dumb. Those who brought this poor man to Christ, besought him to observe the case, and put forth his power. Our Lord used more outward actions in the doing of this cure than usual. These were only signs of Christ's power to cure the man, to encourage his faith, and theirs that brought him. Though we find great variety in the cases and manner of relief of those who applied to Christ, yet all obtained the relief they sought. Thus it still is in the great concerns of our souls....

Verse Mark 7:37. _HE HATH DONE ALL THINGS WELL_] This has been, and ever will be, true of every part of our Lord's conduct. In _creation, providence_, and _redemption_ he hath done all things _well._ The wisest philosophers are agreed that, considering _creation_ as a _whole_, it would be impossible to improve it. Every thing has been made in _number, weight_, and _measure_; there really is nothing _deficient_, nothing _redundant_; and the _good_ of the _creature_ seems evidently more consulted than the _glory_ of the _Creator_. The creature's good is every where _apparent_; but to find out _how_ the Creator is glorified by these works requires the _eye_ of the _philosopher_. And as he has done all things well in _creation_, so has he in _providence_: here also every thing is in number, weight...

THE HEALING OF A DEAF-MUTE. The cure of the Syro-Phœ nician woman's daughter threatens the privacy Jesus sought in Tyre. He therefore withdraws to Decapolis (another Gentile district, Matthew 4:25 *), going northward through Sidon, and presumably reaching Decapolis by a circuitous route which avoided Galilee. (Wellhausen's conjecture, Bethsaida for Sidon, is unnecessary.) The incident that follows is peculiar to Mk. Jesus heals a deaf-mute, by means not unusual in that age (_cf._ account of healings by Vespasian in Tacitus, _Hist._ iv. 81). Mt. omits this story, perhaps because the methods employed (cf.
