And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. AND HE SAID UNTO HER - "O woman, great is thy faith" () As Bengel beautifully remarks, Jesus "marveled" only at two things-faith and unbelief (see the note at ). FOR THIS SAYING GO THY WAY; THE DEVIL IS GONE OUT OF THY DAUGHTER. That moment the deed was done....

24-30 Christ never put any from him that fell at his feet, which a poor trembling soul may do. As she was a good woman, so a good mother. This sent her to Christ. His saying, Let the children first be filled, shows that there was mercy for the Gentiles, and not far off. She spoke, not as making light of the mercy, but magnifying the abundance of miraculous cures among the Jews, in comparison with which a single cure was but as a crumb. Thus, while proud Pharisees are left by the blessed Saviour, he manifests his compassion to poor humbled sinners, who look to him for children's bread. He still goes about to seek and save the lost....

Though she might not have been strictly a “Greek,” yet she came under this general appellation as a foreigner....

EXPOSITION MARK 7:1, MARK 7:2 These verses, according to the Greek construction, should run thus: AND THERE ARE GATHERED TOGETHER UNTO THE PHARISEES, AND CERTAIN OF THE scribes, WHICH HAD COME FROM JERUSALEM, AND HAD SEEN THAT SOME OF HIS DISCIPLES ATE THEIR BREAD WITH DEFILED, THAT IS, UNWASHEN, HANDS. Or word of faith; in which she expressed such great faith in him: the Persic version reads it, "go thy way; for with the blessing of this word, the devil is gone out of thy daughter": as if this saying referred to the word Christ, and the divine power that went along with it, to the ejection of the devil; when it refers to the saying of the woman, and not to the words of Christ, which follow, GO THY WAY; in peace, thy request is granted; it is as thou wouldst have it: THE DEVIL IS GONE OUT OF THY DAUGHTER. Christ, who as God is every where, and whose divine power reaches to all places, persons, and things had, in a secret and powerful manner, cast the devil out of this woman's daughter; without going to her, or speaking to him, his power had wrought the miracle effectually....

Mark 7:24. _And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: the woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. THE HEALING OF THE GREEK WOMAN'S DAUGHTER. Jesus now leaves Galilee and withdraws to Gentile districts, not to evangelize them, but to avoid Herod and the Pharisees, and to train the Twelve. A Greek, _i.e._ a pagan, woman discovers Him, and requests Him to heal her daughter. Jesus asserts His conviction that His mission is to the Jews. The assertion is somewhat harsh, only softened by the diminutive little dogs, _i.e._ household dogs. This must be original. The woman's wit is seen in the way she catches up and builds on the very word which Jesus uses. If Jesus said dogs and the woman changed it to little dogs, the repartee is dulled. Mt. says the woman's request was granted because of her faith. Mk. implies that Jesus yielded out of admiration for the quickness of her answer.
