Verse Matthew 15:39. _HE SENT AWAY THE MULTITUDE_] But not before he had instructed their souls, and fed and healed their bodies. _THE COASTS OF MAGDALA._] In the parallel place, Mark 8:10, this place is called _Dalmanutha_. Either _Magdala_ was formed by a transposition of letters from _Dalman_, to which the Syriac termination _atha_ had been added, or the one of these names refers to the _country_, and the other to a _town_ in that neighbourhood. Jesus went into the _country_, and proceeded till he came to the chief _town_ or _village_ in that district. Whitby says, "Magdala was a city and territory beyond Jordan, on the banks of _Gadara_. The miracle recorded here - the feeding of the four thousand - took place on a mountain near the Sea of Galilee. The same account is recorded in Mark 8:1. The circumstances of the miracle are so similar to the one recorded in Matthew 14:14, as to need little additional explanation. MATTHEW 15:39 Magada,n {C} The best external evidence supports Magada,n, yet not only the site, but even the existence of such a place-name is uncertain. The parallel passage in Mark 8:10 has “the districts of Dalmanutha” (ta. me,rh Dalmanouqa,), an equally unknown site and name. THE SECOND FEEDING OF THE MULTITUDE (Mark 8:1 *) Mt. follows Mk. closely, but again adds women and children. I would not send them away fasting (Matthew 15:32), according to Allen, heightens the note of mastery and dignity of Christ's aims. Magadan (Matthew 15:39) is as great a puzzle as Mk.'s Dalmanutha. Possibly Magdala, the reading of some MSS. here and of others in Mk., is meant....
