AND HE CAME AND DWELT IN A CITY CALLED NAZARETH - a small town in Lower Galilee, lying in the territory of the tribe of Zebulon, and about equally distant from the Mediterranean sea on the west and the sea of Galilee on the east. 23._He shall be called a Nazarene _Matthew does not derive _Nazarene _from _Nazareth, _as if this were its strict and proper etymology, but only makes an allusion. The word נזיר, or _Nazarite, _signifies _holy and devoted to God, _and is derived from נזר, _to separate. _The noun נזר, indeed, signifies a _flower: _(221) but Matthew refers, beyond all doubt, to the former meaning. For we nowhere read that _Nazarites _meant _blooming _or _flourishing, _but persons who were _consecrated to God, _according to the directions given by the Law, (Numbers 6:1) The meaning is: though it was by fear that Joseph was driven into a corner of Galilee, yet God had a higher design, and appointed the city of Nazare

19-23 Egypt may serve to sojourn in, or take shelter in, for awhile, but not to abide in. Christ was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, to them he must return. Did we but look upon the world as our Egypt, the place of our bondage and banishment, and heaven only as our Canaan, our home, our rest, we should as readily arise and depart thither, when we are called for, as Joseph did out of Egypt. The family must settle in Galilee. Nazareth was a place held in bad esteem, and Christ was crucified with this accusation, Jesus the Nazarene. Wherever Providence allots the bounds of our habitation, we must expect to share the reproach of Christ; yet we may glory in being called by his name, sure that if we suffer with him, we shall also be glorified with him....

Verse Matthew 2:23. _THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED WHICH WAS SPOKEN BY THE_ _PROPHETS_] It is difficult to ascertain by what prophets this was spoken. The margin usually refers to Judges 13:5, where the angel, foretelling the birth of Samson, says, _No razor shall come_ _upon his head; for the child shall be a_ NAZARITE (נזיר _nezir_) _unto God from the womb_. The second passage usually referred to is Isaiah 11:1: _There shall come forth a rod from the stem of Jesse, and a_ BRANCH (נצר _netser_) _shall grow out of his roots_.
