34._Come, you blessed of my Father. _We must remember Christ’s design; for he bids his disciples rest satisfied now with hope, that they may with patience and tranquillity of mind look for the enjoyment of the heavenly kingdom; and next, he bids them strive earnestly, and not become wearied in the right course. To this latter clause he refers, when he promises the inheritance of the heavens to none but those who by good works aim at the prize of the heavenly calling. But before speaking of the reward of good works, he points out, in passing, that the commencement of salvation flows from a higher source; for by calling them _blessed of the Father, _he reminds them, that their salvation proceeded from the undeserved favor of God. Verse 34. _YE BLESSED OF MY FATHER_] This is the king's address to his followers; and contains the _reason_ why they were found in the practice of all righteousness, and were now brought to this state of glory - they were _blessed _- came as _children_, and received the _benediction_ of the _Father_, and _became_, and _continued_ to be, members of the heavenly _family_. _INHERIT_] The inheritance is only for the _children_ of the family - _if sons, then heirs_, Galatians 4:7, but not otherwise. EXPOSITION MATTHEW 25:1 _Parable of the ten virgins. _(Peculiar to St. Matthew.) This parable, as a continuation of the teaching of the last chapter, sets forth the necessity of having and retaining grace unto the end, in order to be able to welcome the advent of Christ. The duty of watchfulness and preparation for the great day is, of course, implied and set forth (Matthew 25:13); but the point is that the oil of God's grace alone enables the soul to meet the bridegroom joyfully, without dismay. The usual marriage customs of the Jews are well known. On the appointed day, the bridegroom, accompanied by his friends, proceeded to the bride's house, and thence escorted her, with her attendant maidens and friends, to his own or his parents' home.
