For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. FOR - nay, on the contrary, so far from doing anything harsh, I did thee every kindness from the earliest years of thy nationality: for instance. God, having testified that he had in nothing been troublesome to the people, now states with how great and with how many benefits he had bound them to himself. But we may prefer taking the words as explanatory and somewhat ironical that he records his benefits in the place of trouble or vexation; though, in my judgment, it is better to read the two clauses apart. _I have brought thee, _he says, _from the land of Egypt, _from that miserable bondage; and then he says, _I have redeemed thee _(163) By the word, redeem, he expresses more clearly and more fully illustrates his kindness. Then he adds, _I have set over thee as leaders Moses, _and Aaron, and Miriam, the sister of them both. God reasons with us, to teach us to reason with ourselves. Let them remember God's many favours to them and their fathers, and compare with them their unworthy, ungrateful conduct toward him....

FOR I BROUGHT THEE UP OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, AND REDEEMED THEE OUT OF THE HOARSE OF SERVANTS - What wert thou? What art thou? Who made thee what thou art? God reminds them.
