The LORD's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. THE LORD'S VOICE CRIETH UNTO THE CITY - Jerusalem. AND THE MAN OF WISDOM. As in Proverbs 13:6, Hebrew, 'sin' is used for 'a man of sin;' and in Psalms 109:4, "prayer" for 'a man of prayer;' so here "wisdom" for 'the man of wisdom.' The Prophet complains here that he and other teachers did but little, though their cry resounded and was heard by the whole people. He therefore says, that the _voice _of God _cried; _as though he had said that there was no excuse for ignorance, for God had indiscriminately exhorted them all to repentance. Now, since what was taught was common to them all, the Prophet deplores their perverseness, for very few were attentive; and the fable was sung, according to the proverb, to the deaf. We must then notice the word _cry; the voice _of God, he says, _crieth. _God did not whisper in the ear of one or two, but he designed his voice to be heard by all from the least to the greatest. 9-16 God, having showed how necessary it was that they should do justly, here shows how plain it was that they had done unjustly. This voice of the Lord says to all, Hear the rod when it is coming, before you see it, and feel it. Hear the rod when it is come, and you are sensible of the smart; hear what counsels, what cautions it speaks. The voice of God is to be heard in the rod of God. Verse 9. _THE LORD'S VOICE CRIETH UNTO THE CITY_] No man is found to hear; but the _man of wisdom_ will hear, תושיה _tushiyah_; a word frequent in the writings of Solomon and Job, signifying wisdom, wealth, substance, reason, essence, happiness; any thing that is complete; or that which is substantial, in opposition to vanity, emptiness, mere show, unsubstantiality. When God speaks, the _man_ _of common sense_, who has any knowledge of God or his own soul, will _see_ thy _name_; but instead of יראה _yireh, will see_, the _Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate_, and _Arabic_, with _twelve_ of _Kennicott's_ and _De Rossi's_ MSS., have read יראי _yirey, they_ _that FEAR_. The _Vulgate_ reads: - Et salus erit timentibus nomen tuum. "And thou shalt be salvation to them that fear thy name." The _Septuagint _- Και σωσει φαβουμενους το ονομα αυτου.

Micah 6:1. _Hear ye now what the LORD saith;_ And yet some doubt the infallible inspiration of Scripture. I would commence every reading of the Scripture with such a word of admonition as this: «Hear ye now what the Lord saith.» That is what the prophet said; but God spake by the prophet: «Hear ye now what the Lord saith.» Micah 6:1. _Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice._ As men were hardened, and turned away their ears, the prophet was bidden to speak to the mountains, those mountains which had been disfigured with the shrines of idols, with altars on every high hill, or, perhaps, those higher hills that were never cultivated, and that remained untouched by the defiling hand of men.
