1-21 The word Nazarite signifies separation. Some were appointed of God, before their birth, to be Nazarites all their days, as Samson and John the Baptist. But, in general, it was a vow of separation from the world and devotedness to the services of religion, for a limited time, and under certain rules, which any person might make if they pleased. A Nazarite is spoken of as well known; but his obligation is brought to a greater certainty than before. The law of the Nazarite is appropriately added to other enactments which concern the sanctity of the holy nation. That sanctity found its highest expression in the Nazarite vow, which was the voluntary adoption for a time of obligations to high and strict modes of self-dedication resembling, and indeed in some particulars exceeding, those under which the priests were placed. THE OFFERINGS REQUIRED AT THE TERMINATION OF THE NAZIRITE VOW. The most distinctive feature of the concluding ritual was the shaving of the hair (_cf._ Acts 18:18) and the burning of it in the fire on the altar. This was probably at first of the nature of an offering, the primitive idea being that, as the hair was the seat of vitality ana energy, to present it to the Deity was to present to Him the best of one's self. Offerings of hair have been common in many religions, and were made on various occasions, particularly by girls just before marriage, and by mourners for the dead (see Pausanias, _Description of Greece_, i. 43, ii. 32; Æ sch., _Cho._ 6; Hom. _Il._ xxiii. 141). A Nazirite (from Heb. _nazir_, 'to separate') is a man or woman 'separated,' i.e consecrated to Jehovah by means of a special vow of abstinence. The word has no connexion with 'Nazarene,' which means an inhabitant of Nazareth. During the period of his vow the Nazirite comes under a threefold obligation, (1) to abstain strictly from wine and all products of the vine, whether intoxicating or not (Numbers 6:3); (2) to let his hair grow (Numbers 6:5); and (3) to avoid all ceremonial defilement through contact with a dead body, even that of a near relative (Numbers 6:7).
