Numbers 8:21

_AND MOSES, AND AARON, AND ALL THE CONGREGATION OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, DID TO THE LEVITES ACCORDING UNTO ALL THAT THE LORD COMMANDED MOSES CONCERNING THE LEVITES, SO DID THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL UNTO THEM._ No JFB commentary on these verses....

21._And the Levites were purified, and they washed their clothes _We have already spoken of the washing, for since it was required of all private individuals, much less would it be allowable for the Levites to handle the sacred things, unless they were first purified. But what follows as to their presentation by the hands of Aaron, was a shadowing forth by symbol of the truth, which at length shone out at the coming of Christ; for it had been of old predicted by the Prophets, that, in the renovation of the Church, those who had hitherto been but of the multitude should become Levites. Therefore, by this figure, God would declare that none even of His elect servants would be approved of and accepted by Him, unless sanctified by the one Priest. (415) And thence an atonement is joined with their offering, in order that the Levites might be pure....

5-26 Here we have directions for the solemn ordination of the Levites. All Israel must know that they took not this honour to themselves, but were called of God to it; nor was it enough that they were distinguished from others. All who are employed for God, must be dedicated to him, according to the employment. Christians must be baptized, ministers must be ordained; we must first give ourselves unto the Lord, and then our services. The Levites must be cleansed. They must be clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. Moses must sprinkle the water of purifying upon them. This signifies the application of the blood of Christ to our souls by faith, that we may be fit to serve the living God. God declares his acceptance of them. Verse Numbers 8:21. _AND AARON MADE AN ATONEMENT FOR THEM_] Though the Levites had been most solemnly consecrated to the Lord's service, and though all legal washings and purifications were duly performed on the occasion, yet they could not approach God till an _atonement_ had been made for them. How strange is it, after all these significations, of the will and purpose of God relative to man, that any priest or any people will attempt to draw nigh to God without an atonement! As sure as God hath spoken it, there is no entrance into the holiest but through the blood of Jesus, Hebrews 10:19....

The Levites could only undertake their duties Numbers 3; Numbers 4 after the formal exchange of the Levites for the first-born Numbers 3:44. The distinction between the “consecration” of the priests Leviticus 8 and the less solemn “purification” Numbers 8:21 of the Levites is marked. AND THE LEVITES WERE PURIFIED,.... From sin, by the sprinkling of the sin water, or water of purification on them, Numbers 8:7; AND THEY WASHED THEIR CLOTHES; that they might have no defilement about them, neither in their bodies, nor in their garments: AND AARON OFFERED THEM [AS] AN OFFERING BEFORE THE LORD; a wave offering, as in Numbers 8:11; AND AARON MADE AN ATONEMENT FOR THEM TO CLEANSE THEM; by offering the sacrifices for them, Numbers 8:12....

Numbers 8:5. _And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them._ These men were to be the servants of God; they are the type of God's elect, a people set apart unto divine service, to be zealous for good works. «Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.» That is just the way that God the Holy Ghost takes Christians out of the main of mankind, and cleanses them. And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean. The lighting of the seven lamps introduced in the beginning of the wilderness book is of blessed meaning. The seven lamps were to illuminate the candlestick of beaten gold, throw their light upon the candlestick so that the gold and beautiful workmanship might be seen. THE PURIFICATION OF THE LEVITES. This differed from that of the priests (Exodus 29, Leviticus 8), for the Levites (_a)_ were only sprinkled with water instead of being washed altogether and anointed with oil; (_b)_ merely washed their ordinary garments instead of being clad in special garments. The shaving of all their hair was in pursuance of the belief mentioned on p. 216: if ceremonial impurity infected the person at all, it would exist in a concentrated form in the hair.
