A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight. Under this prohibition of "a false balance" is forbidden all fraud, by whatsoever suns of deception it may be committed, (; ). 10-31 This is the description of a virtuous woman of those days, but the general outlines equally suit every age and nation. She is very careful to recommend herself to her husband's esteem and affection, to know his mind, and is willing that he rule over her. 1. Verse Proverbs 11:30. _THE FRUIT OF THE RIGHTEOUS_ IS _A TREE OF LIFE_] עץ חיים _ets chaiyim_, "the tree of lives." It is like that tree which grew in the paradise of God; increasing the bodily and mental vigour of those who ate of it. _HE THAT WINNETH SOULS_ IS _WISE._] Wisdom seeks to reclaim the wanderers; and he who is influenced by wisdom will do the same....

WINNETH SOULS - Better, a wise man winneth souls. He that is wise draws the souls of people to himself, just as the fruit of the righteous is to all around him a tree of life, bearing new fruits of healing evermore. The phrase is elsewhere translated by “taketh the life” 1 Kings 19:4; Psalms 31:13. The wise man is the true conqueror. Either the fruit which grows upon Christ, the tree of life, and which they receive from him; even all the blessings of grace, peace, pardon, righteousness, and life, Revelation 2:7; or the fruits which the righteous bring forth under the influence of divine grace; they are trees of righteousness, and are filled with the fruits of righteousness by Christ, and have their fruit unto holiness, and their end everlasting life. CHAPTER 11 THE CONTRAST CONTINUED The continued contrast in this chapter between the righteous and the wicked contains many precious gems, sweet to faith and wholesome for instruction. In the second verse there is a warning as to pride. Pride and shame are vitally linked together, as is lowliness and wisdom. Lowliness therefore is true wisdom. A Rabbinical comment on this passage says, “Lowly souls are filled with wisdom as the lowly places are filled with water.” Again riches are mentioned. They profit nothing in the day of wrath. _the fruit of the righteous_ We should rather perhaps have expected the proverb to run, "the righteous (himself) is a tree of life," in his beneficent influence upon others (Revelation 22:2); but the object of the proverb in both its clauses is to lay stress upon the attractive power of goodness, and this consists rather in the outward conduct, in words and works, than in the inward character, in motives and principles; rather in the fruit than in the tree. _a tree of life_ See Proverbs 3:18, note. _he that winneth souls_is _wise_ Rather, AND A WISE MAN WINNETH (lit. _taketh_) SOULS.
