Proverbs 12:28

In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death. IN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (IS) LIFE; AND (IN) THE PATHWAY (THEREOF THERE IS) NO DEATH. "The pathway:" two Hebrew nouns, as in the English version, derek (H1870) nªtiybaah (H5410); the path way. A narrow way trodden by the feet, as distinguished from the cart-road. [The Masoretes read it without the dot, the trodden right way, as distinguished from the devious 'crooked ways into' which the wicked "turn aside" (Psalms 125:5). If the Mappiq, or dot, be read, the sense is, the way of ITS path - i:e., the way of the path of righteousness]. The Chaldaic, Septuagint, Vulgate, Arabic, and Syriac, for "no" ...

Verse Proverbs 12:28. _IN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS_ IS _LIFE_] חיים _chaiyim,_ _lives; life_ temporal, and _life_ eternal. _AND_ IN _THE PATHWAY_ THEREOF THERE IS _NO DEATH._] Not only do the _general precepts_ and _promises_ of God lead _to life eternal_, and promote _life temporal_; but every _duty_, every _act of faith,_ _patience of hope_, and _labour of love_, though requiring much _self-abasement, self-denial_, and often an _extension_ of _corporal_ _strength_, all _lead to life_. For in every case, in every particular, "the path of duty is the way of safety." The latter clause is only a repetition of the _sense_ of the former....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 12:1 INSTRUCTION; correction, discipline, which shows a man his faults, gives him a lowly opinion of himself, and opens his mind to receive _knowledge, _especially the knowledge of himself and of all moral obligations. IS BRUTISH; is as insensible to higher aspirations, to regret for the past or hope of amendment, as a brute beast (comp. Proverbs 30:2). On this point St. Augustine is quoted: "Quicumque corripi non vis, ex eo sane corripiendus es quia corripi non vis. Non vis enim tua tibi vitia demonstrari; non vis ut feriantur, fiatque tibi utilis dolor, quo medicum quaeras; non vis tibi tu ipse ostendi, ut cum deformem te vides, reformaturum desideres, eique supplices ne in illa remaneas foeditate

IN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS [IS] LIFE,.... The life of the soul, or spiritual life, as Aben Ezra; and eternal life, as Gersom. One that is in the true way of righteousness is one that is instilled by the righteousness of Christ, which justification is the justification of life: such an one is made alive, and reckons himself alive in a law sense; and enjoys true spiritual peace and comfort, arising from the love and favour of God, and acceptance with him, in which he sees his interest, and in which is life; and this righteousness, by which he is justified before God, entitles him to eternal life; to which the path of holiness, he is directed and enabled to walk in, leads; though it is a narrow way, and a strait gate, Matthew 7:14. Christ, and righteousness and holiness in and by him, are the way, the truth, and the life, or the true way to eternal life; and all in this way now live spirit...

CHAPTER 12 THE CONTRAST IN RELATION TO VARIOUS CONDITIONS In these proverbs we have the righteous mentioned, his thoughts, his words, his domestic relationship, his attitude toward animal creation Proverbs 12:10); his diligence; all is contrasted with the wicked in these beautiful antithetic expressions of wisdom. The thoughts of the righteous are right Proverbs 12:5), because his heart is right; his words bring deliverance Proverbs 12:6); in speaking truth he showeth forth righteousness Proverbs 12:17); his tongue is health Proverbs 12:1

LIFE: i.e. life eternal. See note on Leviticus 18:5. NO DEATH. immortality. Or take _nethebah_ (as in Judges 5:6; Isaiah 59:8) as denoting, with _derek,_ no devious winding by-path. In this case we must read _'el,_ "to", instead of _'al,_ "no". This avoids the necessity of the italics....

_no death_ The rendering _to death_, i.e. _the pathway_(sc. common and well-trodden, or, of evil men) LEADETH _to death_, is supported by LXX. εἰς θάνατον, and Vulg. _ducit ad mortem_....

IN THE PATH-WAY THEREOF THERE IS NO DEATH— Or, _There is immortality._ The LXX read the clause, _But the way of the revengeful is to death:_ and Houbigant, after the Vulgate, _But a devious way leadeth to death._...
