A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. A MAN SHALL NOT BE ESTABLISHED BY WICKEDNESS. Though for a time here on earth he may, by fraud or by force, obtain and retain prosperity, yet it shall not be for long. Not only shall he "not be established," but he shall be utterly "rooted" out: as the antithesis to the parallel clause implies. BUT THE ROOT OF THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL NOT BE MOVED - by any shock whatever (); as "trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord" (). They are "rooted" in the Lord by faith and love (; ;...

Verse Proverbs 12:3. _A MAN SHALL NOT BE ESTABLISHED BY WICKEDNESS_] Evil is always variable: it has no _fixed principle_, except the _root_ that is in the human heart; and even that is ever assuming _new forms_. Nothing is _permanent_ but _goodness_; and that is _unchangeable_, because it comes from GOD. The _produce_ of goodness is _permanent_, because it has God's _blessing_ in it: the _fruit_ of _wickedness_, or the _property_ procured by wickedness, is _transitory_, because it has God's curse in it. The righteous has his _root_ in God; and therefore _he shall not be moved_....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 12:1 INSTRUCTION; correction, discipline, which shows a man his faults, gives him a lowly opinion of himself, and opens his mind to receive _knowledge, _especially the knowledge of himself and of all moral obligations. IS BRUTISH; is as insensible to higher aspirations, to regret for the past or hope of amendment, as a brute beast (comp. Proverbs 30:2). On this point St. Augustine is quoted: "Quicumque corripi non vis, ex eo sane corripiendus es quia corripi non vis. Non vis enim tua tibi vitia demonstrari; non vis ut feriantur, fiatque tibi utilis dolor, quo medicum quaeras; non vis tibi tu ipse ostendi, ut cum deformem te vides, reformaturum desideres, eique supplices ne in illa remaneas foeditate

A MAN SHALL NOT BE ESTABLISHED BY WICKEDNESS,.... Not any man, though he may be established in his wickedness, so as not to be rooted out of it; yet he cannot be so established by it as not to be removed from a prosperous state and condition into an unhappy and distressed one; he may seem to be in a firm and settled state of prosperity, amidst all his wickedness; be like a green bay tree, spreading itself, and seemingly immovable, when on a sudden it is blown down and rooted up, and is no more: so Babylon will seem to be in a settled state of grandeur, ease, and rest, and say, "I sit a queen, and shall see no sorrow"; when in one day, and in one hour, her destruction shall come upon her, Revelation 18:7; BUT THE ROOT OF THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL NOT BE MOVED; they are rooted and grounded in the love of God, which is immovable; they are rooted and built up in Christ, and so
