Proverbs 12:7

The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand. THE WICKED ARE OVERTHROWN (HEBREW, INFINITIVE FOR THE INDICATIVE PRESENT), AND ARE NOT - (.) BUT THE HOUSE OF THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL STAND. Even here on earth a blessing attends the family or "house" of the righteous (cf. ; ). Evil overtakes the wicked or his "house" soon or late....

Verse Proverbs 12:7. _THE WICKED ARE OVERTHROWN_] Seldom does God give such a long life or numerous offspring. _BUT THE HOUSE OF THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL STAND._] God blesses their progeny, and their families continue long in the earth; whereas the wicked seldom have many generations in a direct line. This is God's mercy, that the entail of iniquity may be in some sort cut off, so that the same vices may not be strengthened by successive generations. For generally the _bad root_ produces not only a _bad_ _plant_, but one _worse than itself_....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 12:1 INSTRUCTION; correction, discipline, which shows a man his faults, gives him a lowly opinion of himself, and opens his mind to receive _knowledge, _especially the knowledge of himself and of all moral obligations. IS BRUTISH; is as insensible to higher aspirations, to regret for the past or hope of amendment, as a brute beast (comp. Proverbs 30:2). On this point St. Augustine is quoted: "Quicumque corripi non vis, ex eo sane corripiendus es quia corripi non vis. Non vis enim tua tibi vitia demonstrari; non vis ut feriantur, fiatque tibi utilis dolor, quo medicum quaeras; non vis tibi tu ipse ostendi, ut cum deformem te vides, reformaturum desideres, eique supplices ne in illa remaneas foeditate

THE WICKED ARE OVERTHROWN, AND [ARE] NOT,.... With such an overthrow as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. _the wicked are overthrown_ Lit. TO OVERTHROW THE WICKED! It is only to overthrow them, and they cease to exist; they have no stay, no power of recovery in them. Comp. Proverbs 10:25; Psalms 37:9-10; Psalms 37:35-38....
