The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness. "The righteous wisely considereth" that though "the house of the wicked" seems flourishing now, yet "the wicked" are doomed to be overthrown "for their wickedness." Verse Proverbs 21:12. _THE RIGHTEOUS_ MAN _WISELY CONSIDERETH_] This verse is understood as implying the _pious concern_ of a righteous man, for a wicked family, whom he endeavours by his _instructions_ to bring into the way of knowledge and peace....

PROVERBS 21:1. WATERCOURSES: not the natural brooks and wadys of Palestine, but the artificial irrigation canals of Egypt or Babylonia, which could be diverted in any direction at will. Proverbs 21:4. Apparently two unconnected lines belonging to different couplets. A connexion can be established only by forced exegesis. God _overthroweth_ The difficulty of this proverb lies in the elliptical character of the second clause, which leaves a subject of necessity to be supplied. The A.V. makes man the subject of the first clause, and God of the second. But it is better to render, either with R.V. text: THE RIGHTEOUS MAN CONSIDERETH THE HOUSE OF THE WICKED; _How_ THE WICKED ARE OVERTHROWN TO _their_ RUIN; or with Ewald and others, and R.V. marg., taking the Righteous One in the first clause to be God (Job 34:17), and retaining the same subject throughout. ONE THAT IS RIGHTEOUS CONSIDERETH THE HOUSE OF THE WICKED; HE OVERTHROWETH THE WICKED TO _their_ RUIN. Both LXX. and Vulg., though differing from one another and from our present Heb. text, make "the righteous" the subject of both clauses....

THE RIGHTEOUS— _The just_ [_Judge_] _makes exact scrutiny into the house of the wicked, to bring the wicked to punishment._ Dr. Grey would read, _The righteous prospereth in his house, but wickedness overthroweth the wicked._ We have the phrase of the first hemistich, in 1 Samuel 18:14 and the second is almost the same as ch.
