7._Peace be within thy bulwarks, _etc. The two clauses express the same sentiment, and, therefore, the meaning of the first is gathered from the second. The term _peace _signifies nothing else than prosperity. The noun שלוה, _shalvah, _in the second clause, sometimes signifies _rest, _but it is more frequently taken for _abundance _or _prosperity _On this account I have translated the noun בחילך _, bechelech, within thy bulwark _(73) I do not find fault with others who have translated it _a ditch _or _outward wall; _but the word _bulwark _agrees better with the word _towers, _which occurs at the close of the verse. Verse Psalms 122:7. _PEACE BE WITHIN THY WALLS_] This is the _form of prayer_ that they are to use: "May _prosperity_ ever reside within thy walls, on all the people that dwell there; and tranquillity within thy palaces or high places, among the _rulers_ and _governors_ of the people....

PEACE BE WITHIN THY WALLS - The word here rendered walls, means properly an host, an army; then a fortification, an entrenchment, especially the ditch or trench with the low wall or breastwork which surrounds it. Gesenius, Lexicon. It refers here to the fortifications or defenses around Jerusalem. AND PROSPERITY - Peace; the same word which is used in the previous verse, and expressing the same idea - that of tranquility. WITHIN THY PALACES - This word properly means a “fortress,” “castle;” then, a palace, a residence of a king or a prince, 1 Kings 16:18; 2 Kings 15:25; Isaiah 25:2. The idea is, that such

The description of Jerusalem exactly suits his day (Psalms 122:3). The "thrones of judgment, thrones of the house of David" (Psalms 122:5) would be his own throne and that of his son Solomon, whom he associated. PSALM 120-134 The Psalms of Degrees Fifteen brief Psalms follow, called songs of degrees, or, ascents. They were in all probability used by Israel going up to Jerusalem three times a year to celebrate the feasts of the Lord--”Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, a testimony for Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.” They are indeed Psalms of “the goings-up” for we rise higher and higher as we read through them.
