Verse Psalms 150:5. _LOUD CYMBALS_] צלצלים _tseltselim_. Two hollow plates of brass, which, being struck together, produced a sharp clanging sound. This instrument is still in use. What the _high-sounding_ _cymbals_ meant I know not; unless those of a _larger make_, struck above the head, and consequently emitting a louder sound....

PRAISE HIM UPON THE LOUD CYMBALS - literally, “the cymbals of sound” or hearing. That is, Let there be audibly expressed joy. The allusion here is to an instrument of music that was most distinctly heard in union with other instruments. The sound of the cymbal would be most clearly audible in its accompaniment of the other instruments referred to, as the sound of cymbals, or as the “triangle” would be now. The Hebrew word rendered cymbal means a tinkling, clanging, ringing, as of metal, or of arms; then, a whirring, as of wings (compare the notes at Isaiah 18:1); then, any tinkling or clanging instrument, as a fish-spear or harpoon; then, cymbals, instruments of music. EXPOSITION COMMENTATORS generally are agreed that this is a most noble psalm, a fit conclusion to the noble collection which here terminates. Professor Cheyne says, "Psalms 150:1 closes this Hallelujah group not less worthily than the whole group concludes the Psalter. It is the finale of the spiritual concert." Hengstenberg observes, "We have here a full-toned call to the praise of God, quite appropriate to the close of this psalm-cycle and of the whole Psalter." The "Four Friends" say, "With these grand words the Psalter closes." Psalms 150:1. _Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary:_ Notice how, in this last Psalm, it is praise, praise, praise, all the way through. I think we have the word «praise» some thirteen times in the six verses. It is all «praise him, praise him, praise him.» It is not enough to do it once, or twice, we should keep on praising the Lord till we should make the very heavens ring with the music of his praises. «Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary:» that is, in his holy place where he dwells. Begin, ye angels, cherubim, and seraphim, pour forth his praise. PSALM 144-150 THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS The five Psalms with which this marvellous book closeth are all Psalms of praise. The word “praise” is found in the Hebrew thirty-seven times. Each one of these Psalms begins and ends with a hallelujah; there are ten hallelujahs. First is a hallelujah which celebrates Himself, He who is the God of Jacob. Precious vision of Him who delights to call Himself “the God of Jacob,” the God who loves the sinner and has redeemed His people. Who is He? CL. Each book ends with a doxology. Here we have a much longer doxology, which closes Book V and the whole Psalter also. The praise of God begins from His sanctuary, _i.e._ probably from His sanctuary in heaven, not from the Temple on Zion. (_See also Supplement_)...

_the loud cytubals … the high sounding cymbals_ The clear sounding cymbals … the clanging cymbals. Two kinds of cymbals are obviously meant: the first, lit. _cymbals of hearing_, may have been a smaller kind, producing a sharp, clear sound, possibly _castanets_: the second may have been a larger kind, producing a clanging, booming sound. "The Arabs have two distinct varieties, large and small.… They use their large cymbals in religious ceremonies, but the smaller kind seem to be almost limited to the accompaniment of dancers." PRAISE HIM UPON THE LOUD CYMBALS— _With the voice-cymbals._ Mudge. The two kinds of cymbals, says he, seem one to be soft and low, and therefore to admit a _voice_ to be heard; from whence the name: the other to be high and loud. But very frank and honest is the confession of Aben-ezra upon this subject. "We have no way to know what several of these musical instruments were; there being many to be found in the country of the Ishmaelites (i.e. Mahometans), which are not among the men of Edom; i.e. Christians; and others among them, which the wise men of Israel never heard of." It may be proper just to observe, that the Vulgate and other versions add another psalm at the end of this book; which they tell us in the title was written by David when he went to engage with Goliah.
